2 Metaphor Making a comparison between two unlike things WITHOUT using “like” or “as” Ex: She is a walking dictionary. Ex:The classroom was a chaotic jungle.

3 Simile Making a comparison between two unlike things using “like” or “as” Ex: Her eyes shone like the sun. Ex:The students were as loud as zoo animals.

4 Personification Giving human characteristics to a non-human Ex: The thunder clapped loudly in the dark sky. Ex: The wind whistled among the trees.

5 Alliteration Repetition of a consonant sound at the beginning of a word Ex: The rabbits raced around the ranch. Ex:The snake slithered slowly and silently.

6 Hyperbole Exaggeration for effect Ex: I’m so hungry I could eat an elephant. Ex:I called you a thousand times yesterday!

7 Onomatopoeia A word that makes a sound Ex: Buzz! The bee flew past my head. Ex:The popcorn popped rapidly in the pan.

8 Idiom A word or phrase that means something different than what it says Ex: He sent me on a wild goose chase! Ex:It’s raining cats and dogs outside!

9 Oxymoron Two words placed together that have opposite meanings Ex: Graduating high school was bittersweet. Ex:I ordered jumbo shrimp for dinner.

10 Pun Humorous play on words that have more than one meaning Ex: I wondered why the baseball was getting bigger. Then it hit me. Ex:To write with a broken pencil is pointless.
