RCSD Bloodborne Pathogen Protection Program Presented by Suzanne Wheatcraft, MS, CPG Director of School Environmental Health & Safety
2
Bloodborne Pathogen Protection for RCSD Teachers and Staff l Definitions l Exposure Control l Methods of Compliance
3
Definitions - Bodily Fluids l Blood l Saliva containing blood l Semen l Vaginal secretions l Any body fluid which can contain blood *
4
Definitions - Pathways of Infection l Skin l Eyes l Mucous membranes l Other mechanisms of fluid transfer l Body opening where blood is present ---------Broken Skin --------Eyes Mucous Membrane Inhalation & Ingestion
5
Infection depends on... l Virulence of the agent (it’s ability to overcome body defenses) l Route of infection & l Relative immunity of the host Wash often to prevent exposure!!!! Clean Hands #1 Defense
6
Bloodborne Pathogens l Microorganisms that may be in blood or body fluids and are l Capable of causing disease in human beings l HIV & HBV viruses most frequently associated with occupational infections
7
Potentially Hazardous Duties l Body contact when moving students in/ out of wheelchairs. l Body fluid clean-up. l Contact with students bleeding. l Physically helping developmentally disabled students. l Personal hygiene assistance. l Others?
8
Exposure Control - Written Plan l Defines safe practices - Universal Precautions l Restricts the possibility of transmission of fluids from pathogen vectors to others Exposure Control Plan of the RCSD
9
Universal Precautions l Treat all blood and body fluids as infectious l Wear protective clothing - Gloves l Wash often l Disinfect Surfaces l Use paper towels l Attend training Don’t get caught, follow Universal Precautions!!!! Don’t get caught, follow Universal Precautions!!!!
10
Exposure Control - Evaluate High Risk Employees l Teachers and Paras in daycare, preschool and other programs involving the education of developmentally disabled l Phys. Ed. staff l Nursing Teachers l Home/Hospital Teachers l School Sentries l District Security l All Custodial Staff
11
Exposure Control - When Exposure Occurs l Make the hepatitis B vaccination series available l A licensed physician evaluates all exposed employees l Provide laboratory testing of exposed employees for possibility of infection
12
Exposure Control - Pre-exposure Vaccine Series What is my risk? Do I need the vaccine? What are the side effects? What does my Doctor recommend?
13
Methods of Compliance l Determine engineering and work practice controls to prevent accidental exposure to blood borne pathogens. Use often and know the location of the closest washing facility. Wear latex gloves. Use a disinfectant such as Spectrum R-T-U.
