BLOOD Unit 10.1

Misconceptions  Bloodletting  As far back as Greek times and as recently as the 1800’s  Thought that draining the blood from the body would “let” the sickness out and restore the individual to health

Bloodletting in History  Famous individual  Had a sore throat and fever  Physicians bled him  Drained 5-7 pints of blood over 16 hours  Roughly 40-60% of the body’s blood supply  Died shortly after

George Washington

Bloodletting  Bloodletting is still going on in some cultures Bloodletting is still going on in some cultures

Blood  ½ of your next test will be over human blood  Test is next Wednesday  There will be assignments for this unit  Formative: Vocab Cards (due: 4/5)  Formative: online virtual lab (due: (4/4)  Formative: Heart Dissection Quiz (4/4)  Summative: Blood Disease Poster (4/5)

Vocab Cards  Hemoglobin  Hemolysis  Hemostasis  Plasma  Platelet plug  Platelets  Red blood cells  White Blood Cells  Rh factor  Agglutination  Buffy Coat  Coagulation  Diapedesis  Erythropoiesis  Erythropoietin  Fibrin  Formed Elements  Hematocrit  Antigens

Vocab Cards  Have three things:  Definition  What does it do? Purpose/Function  Analagy/Simile Sentence A red blood cell is like…

Blood Type Virtual lab  https://www.classzone.com/books/hs/ca/sc/bio_0 7/virtual_labs/virtualLabs.html https://www.classzone.com/books/hs/ca/sc/bio_0 7/virtual_labs/virtualLabs.html  Read the problem  Read the background (yellow tab, upper right corner)  Complete the Explore portion  Complete the Procedure  As you complete the procedure and fill out the corresponding lab journal, please print your lab journal pages

Blood Disease Poster (must be physical, not digital)  Iron-Deficient Anemia  Aplastic Anemia  Pernicious Anemia  Sickle Cell Anemia  Cooley’s Anemia  Jaundice  Hemophilia  Polycythemia  Acute Lymphocytic Anemia  Acute Myeloid leukemia  Chronic lymphocytic leukemia  Chronic myeloid leukemia

Blood Disease Poster  Description of RBC’s, label, picture (colored), Function  How are they affected by the disease  Classification of White Blood Cells  Label, Picture (colored), Function, % of WBC’s  Argranulocytes Lymphocyte Monocyte  Granulocytes Neutrophil Eosinophil basophil

Blood Disease Poster  What is the disease?  What blood cells does it affect?  How does it affect them?  Symptoms  Famous people  Misconceptions?  Treatment

Blood Functions

 Transports Oxygen and carbon dioxide Waste products of metabolism (urea and lactic acid) Hormones Enzymes Nutrients (glucose, fats, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals) Blood Cells (white and red) Plasma proteins (fibrinogen, albumin, globulin)

Blood Functions  Regulates  Body temperature  Acid-base balance (pH)  Fluid and electrolytes  Protects  White blood cells protect against infection  Antibodies detect foreign material  Clotting factors prevent excessive bleeding

Blood Elements  Formed Elements  Solid components  45% of blood  Red blood cells (erythrocytes)  White blood cells (leukocytes)  Platelets  Plasma  Liquid component  55% of blood

Blood Elements  When added to centrifuge  Blood elements separate  Three layers  Liquid plasma: top  Red blood Cells: bottom  Buffy coat: White blood cells and platelets

Blood Elements

 Hematocrit  Total blood volume that is composed of RBC’s  Expressed as a percentage of total blood volume  Men: 45%  Women: 40%  Altitude Hematocrit can go up to 60-65%, because of an increase in RBC production (oxygen carrying)  Dehydration Can cause hematocrit to decrease due to loss of plasma, or decreased blood volume

Blood  Roughly 8% of body weight  pH between 7.35 and 7.45  Average temp of 38 degrees Celsius (100.4)  5 times thicker than water
