4 March 2014 Next 10 steps for new UM Users HOMEWORK! 1. explore the UMUI 2. use the PUMA service to copy standard jobs and change them to be yours 3. set up userids on HECToR and set up your userid for running the UM (you will need a.profile file) 4. run a standard UM job, ask GL or Jeff Cole for help and advice to achieve this 5. produce a plot of your favourite field to test out your understanding of file formats and local graphics packages

5 March 2014 6.learn about the code maintenance tool if you plan to change the model or try the FCM tutorial, contact Rosalyn Hatcher (r.s.hatcher@reading.ac.uk) 7.find a UM job which is similar to the one you want to run and explore it’s options and settings in the UMUI 8.play with different STASH settings to make sure you can output what you need for your job 9.look at the UM source code browser (on the NCAS CMS web pages) to look at the actual UM Fortran code 10. READ the UM User Guide available on the NCAS CMS web site
