4 Now that I have evidence about the 20 th century debate, how do I build a contention? 1.First, read through your evidence and highlight what you think is the most compelling or effective evidence. 2.Then re-read your evidence and look for patterns— create categories for different facts and the ideas or topics that they cover. 3.Write a statement that addresses each category of facts. 4.Determine if your contention should address one or two of those categories. 5.Write a contention using the correct format: 1.The 20 th century was one of progress because ____. 2.The 20 th century was not one of progress because _____.
