Welcome to Unit 7’s seminar: Children and Attention Disorders Do we have any questions about the Unit 5 project? …about Unit 6?

Let’s begin (as usual!) with our “Key Concepts” for Week 7:

Learning disability: Can I get a definition?

Learning disability: auditory visual, memory, speech production, and writing disorders. Interference in the learning process related to a mental processing problem including, but not limited to auditory, visual, memory, speech production, and writing disorders.

Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD):

Clinical definition describing a learning disability in children who, due to neurological anomalies lack age appropriate attention and impulse control. This disorder also features overactive behaviors that result from extreme lack of impulse control.

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD):

Clinical definition of a learning disability whereby children and adults exhibit insufficient adequate control of their attention without lacking in impulse control skills.

Neuropsychology: How would you define this study?

Neuropsychology: Science that combines the study of neural (brain) activity as it relates to the development of human behavior (psychology). Is used to explain learning disabilities, memory, and cognitive impairments. The brain reactions are studied using machines that measure activity in specific parts of the brain.

What is the difference between ADD and ADHD?

According to our reading this week, children with learning disorders can be helped using some simple learning strategies. Let’s name some and tell how these can make learning easier…

Why do you think that so many children have been diagnosed with learning disorders?

Do we have any questions or ideas to share about the material we covered thus far today?
