Humans have a need for self- fulfillment and seeking perfection: Humans sometimes need to feel like they are “fully human” and without religion, some people feel like there is a major element of their lives that is missing. (Religion gives them purpose to life) Humans sometimes also feel the need to seek out perfection in life and for some, to leave religious practice out of the picture, is illogical. Humans have a need to fulfill his/her need for dependency: Humans sometimes feel as if they need something to trust and to make them feel secure. Religion sometimes helps humans face their problems in a positive way (i.e. they can find hope) Especially in times of crisis, humans feel they need religion or God more than ever to help them get through something and/or make them feel secure. 8. Learning Goal: I will understand what religion is and why people turn to religion. Humans have a need for a moral or viable code of ethics: Moral codes help guide human behaviour. Studies have shown that people attached to a “religious organization” who practice it as it should be practiced (i.e. they’re not fanatical), are less likely to commit a crime. When people are really concerned with doing what is right and being accepted into heaven, they seem to care more about things like stealing or how they treat other people. (This doesn’t suggest that people who aren’t religious aren’t ethical but rather states that when people are religious, their particular code of ethics (i.e. the commandments) is often times at the forefront of how they make moral decisions.
