The government remained in the hands of the General Court Became a charter colony after John Winthrop Jr. obtained a charter from King Charles I Puritans established a theocratic government Increasing hostility between the colony and England resulted in annulment of charter Puritans intolerant of other beliefs All laws centered around God Taxes were collected to support Puritan churches

6 Population (Gebran A.) The population of the colony grew rapidly, peaking in the 1630’s. There was also a rather large amount of Native Americans living in the area. A vast majority of the population was Puritan.

7 Culture (Gebran A.) The colony had unique characteristics. Strong focus on education. The Puritans believed they were doing God’s work. Used a system known as “The New England Way”. Male dominated colony. Land was divided by communal agreement.

11 Key People (Gebran A.) John Winthrop : One of the leading figures in the founding of the Massachusetts Bay colony. Reverend John Cotton : The foremost minister and religious figure of the colony. Thomas Dudley : Served as governor of the colony at times and founded Newtowne, now known as Cambridge. King Charles I : Granted the 1629 charter to found a second colony in the Massachusetts area. John Underhill : An early English settler who was hired by the colony as a captain to train their militia William Blackstone : Invited Puritans to live with him in Massachusetts.
