2 EDUCATION IN THE ITALIAN CONSTITUTION  Article 33 : “… art and science as well as their teaching are free”. “The Republic lays down general rules for education and establishes state schools for all branches and grades” “Public bodies and private persons have the right to establish schools and education institutes, at no cost to the State.” “The law defining rights and obligations of private schools has to guarantee full liberty to them and equal treatment with pupils of state schools”.

3 EDUCATION IN THE ITALIAN CONSTITUTION  Article 34 : Schools are open to everyone. Primary education, given for at least eight years, is compulsory. Capable and deserving pupils, even if lacking financial resources, have the right to attain the highest levels of education.The Republic furthers the realization of this right by scholarships. The main purpose of higher education, is to promote scientific progress of the nation and to provide all citizens with education and training that will lead to employment

9 Nursery school “Scuola dell’infanzia” NATIONAL GUIDELINES (2007) Promoting children’s development of autonomy: Learning to take part into activities in different contexts, acquiring self-confidence and learning to trust on the others. Experiencing the social setting and understanding the rules of everyday life; taking part into decisions, giving reasons for opinions, choices and behaviours.

14 Primary School “Scuola Primaria” Organization: Min. 15 max 27 pupils per class School-time: Not less than 5 days a week Full time (40 hours per week) Half time (27 hours per week) Flexibility: - TIME: the whole timetable and the timetable devoted to each discipline can be modified according to didactic autonomy guaranteed by law to scholastic institutions

19 Lower Grade Secondary School “Scuola Media”  COMPULSORY  THREE YEARS (Students from 11 to 13 years)  YEARLY CURRICULUM (957 HOURS / YEAR) + 198 OPTIONAL HOURS (compulsory for schools, facultative for families)  FINAL EXAM, concluding the first stage and giving access to the second stage of education.

21 Lower Grade Secondary School “Scuola Media”  AIMS: Promoting, through disciplines, the development of personal abilities of study and of social interaction; Organizing and enhancing students’ knowledge and skills, with regards to cultural tradition and social, cultural and scientific evolution in contemporary society

22 Lower Grade Secondary School “Scuola Media”  AIMS: Gradually developping students’ competences and ability to make choices responding to their vocation and aptitude; Introducing the study of a second foreign language spoken in E.U.

23 Upper Grade Secondary School “Scuola Superiore”  COMPULSORY (before reaching 16 years)  FIVE YEARS (Students from 14 to 19 years)  FINAL EXAM, concluding the second stage and giving access to University
