This strategy helps you understand what you have read because you have to figure out what the text is about, identify the most important ideas, then retell the ideas in your own words.
Identifying the main idea and details in a paragraph can help you summarize a selection.

5. SKILL: Main Idea and Details
The topic tells what the entire selection is mainly about
Main ideas are the most important ideas, information, or facts about the topic.
Supporting details are smaller pieces of information
