 Apply to Multiple Campuses  Give yourself options  Don’t forget about the application fee waiver  Find the “Right Fit”  Location, size, majors, sports, cost, atmosphere  Know Chances for Admission  Review acceptance rates  Review profile for accepted Freshmen  Do your RESEARCH!

Reach GPA and test score averages for previous years freshmen are ABOVE yours Admission rate will make the probability of acceptance more of a gamble “Top Tier/Competitive” Schools:  Ivy Leagues = Acceptance rate usually well below a 20%.  If it’s a very selective college, will it spark your competitive side or overwhelm you?

 Your grades and test scores MATCH the average for previous years freshmen students admitted.  Increases the chances that you will be admitted.  Recommend you apply to at least 2-4 campuses.

 Your GPA and test scores are ABOVE the average for previous years freshmen students admitted.  Admission rate indicates high probability of admission.  Recommend you apply to at least 1-2 campuses  Some students use a Community College as their Safety school

The University of California

Admission requirements vary by institution. May use the same criteria as UC/CSU but more Math & Science may be required. Students should check with individual campuses to determine admission requirements, testing requirements & deadlines. Naviance is a great tool for this research. Scholarship deadlines may be before the application deadline! Often use “committee” type admission process & comprehensive review For highly selective colleges – Strong SAT scores (2100+) Financially- Many out of state & Private colleges offer “deals”

 Most schools require applications to be submitted online  If the college accepts the Common Application we recommend you use it & sync to your Naviance Account  Letters of Recommendation required. You will request through Naviance but need to provide Counselor & Teachers with either a Brag Sheet or an updated resume  Make sure you report correctly Counselor/Teacher e-mails  Any 4-year college/university should be added to Naviance (even if not using Common App)

Early Decision/Early Action Early Decision - Binding  Apply early (usually in November) to first-choice college.  Receive an admission decision from the college well in advance of the usual notification date (usually by December).  Agree to attend the college if accepted & offered a financial aid package considered adequate by the family.  Apply to only one college early decision.  Apply to other colleges under regular admission plans.  Withdraw all other applications if accepted by ED.  Send a non-refundable deposit well in advance of May 1. Early Action – Nonbinding  Apply early.  Receive an admission decision early in the admission cycle (usually in January or February).  Consider acceptance offer; do not have to commit upon receipt.  Apply to other colleges under regular admission plans.  Give the college a decision no later than the May 1 national response date.

 If you are interested in participating in Athletics at a NAIA college you must also meet eligibility criteria.  NAIA schools are typically smaller, private campuses with a focus on student-athletes.

SAT/ACT Test Scores  Check final testing dates for EACH campus. Registration is usually several weeks before test date.  Send Test scores directly from College Board &/or ACT to colleges. MHS does NOT send these scores.  If student is possible D1 or D2 athlete- also send to NCAA (#9999).

Naviance last year: How to log in, explore interests, careers & colleges SENIOR YEAR Need to make sure the colleges you are applying to are listed in Naviance and that it is updated to reflect your most current selection of schools.  If colleges are not listed in Naviance, we cannot keep track of your list and when documents are sent and received. MHS uses Naviance to submit documents electronically to colleges. Secondary School Reports/Mid-Year Reports/Final Reports Letters of Recommendation (Counselor & Teacher) Transcripts  If you are applying to colleges with the Common Application, you can easily sync the Common Application to Naviance.  Your name and email address must be the same on your Transcript, College Application and in Naviance.

Vocational Programs

EOPS Program (various colleges)  Typically offered at Community Colleges & CSU campuses  Assists historically low-income and educationally disadvantaged students  The program provides admission and academic assistance to EOP- eligible undergraduate students. In many cases, the program offers financial assistance to eligible students.  Cannot just mark the box on application – Must APPLY!!! Students with IEP’s  Most schools offer assistance to students with current IEP’s  Moorpark College – ACCESS Center  University – Look on campuses website  Talk to your counselor AB540 Students  Specific student requirements for undocumented students  Can apply for specific college scholarships  See your Counselor if you have questions

**When researching colleges make sure to discuss this issue with parents**  Vocational Schools- Depends on Program  Community College programs are most affordable  Specialized Vocational Schools can be costly  Community Colleges- Most Affordable  Tuition may be low/Books high  Out of State Tuition High  CSU’s – Mid-Range  UC’s – Higher cost  Private & Out of State Colleges- Cost Varies  Research using NAVIANCE  Look for deals such as WUE
