14 Can you always trust historical sources?

15 Can you always trust historical sources?
THINK! What is the difference between a fact and an opinion?

16 rakA: fact or opinion? Mr Campbell is Head of the Secondary School.
RAK Academy is the best school in the UAE. Mrs. Cormack teaches DT. Mr. Skinner is Head of Year 7. The Green Gazelles are the best House. The School was opened in 1974. Mr. Clarke is the best volleyball player. Mr. McCarthy is the most handsome teacher.

17 Can you always trust historical sources?
Key Words: Reliable: can be trusted to be accurate or correct. Biased: unfair or one-sided opinion. Fact: something known to be true. Opinion: the view somebody takes about a certain issue, often based on personal judgement.

18 Is this a reliable source? Manchester United lost 4-0!
“Arsenal were just lucky. Manchester United showed much more skill and were by far the better team. The referee was totally biased; he allowed three goals that were off-side and the penalty should never have been awarded. Arsenal only won because they cheated.” This is an account of a football match written by a Manchester United fan. Manchester United lost 4-0!

19 How can we tell if a historical source is reliable?
Copy the following into your book: When deciding if a source is reliable, you must look at: who wrote/made the source when it was written/made why it was written (motive) whether it contains mainly fact or opinion

20 Key Terms Archaeology: the study of ancient cultures by looking at their remains, e.g. buildings, graves, tools, and other artefacts usually dug up from the ground. Archaeologist: someone who discovers evidence about ancient cultures by digging in the ground and then works out what happened in the past. Excavate: to dig in a place carefully in order to find objects of archaeological interest.

21 Inferencing Being a historian is like being a detective…we have to look at lots of different evidence to discover facts and reach a conclusion. An inference is an educated guess based on the evidence we have in front of us.

22 Inferencing: An educated guess
