Treasures from the Past “Heritage” is what we have received from the past, what we live with today, and what we will pass on to future generations. That is why the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO) created the World Heritage Committee in 1972 to protect the world’s heritage sites. There are more than 860 world heritage sites all around the world, and UNESCO continues to add to the list. Now let’s take a look at some of the world’s greatest cultural and natural treasures, which offer rare beauty and also teach us about the great civilizations of the world. Shall we begin? Why was the World Heritage Committee created? It was created to protect the world’s heritage sites.

Cultural Heritage 1. Abu Simbel (Egypt)Abu Simbel Abu Simbel is a set of two massive rock temples in southern Egypt. They were built in the 13th century B.C. for Pharaoh Ramesses II and his queen. Thanks to UNESCO, the temples were safely moved to a new location high above the Aswan dam in the 1960s. If it were not for this, Abu Simbel would now be 60 meters underwater! This was the first of UNESCO’s efforts to protect world heritage sites. 2. The Taj Mahal (India) The Taj Mahal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983, is considered “the jewel of Muslim art in India.” It was built by the Indian Emperor Shah Jahan as a memorial to his wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died during the birth of their 14th child. Its architecture combines Persian, Turkish, Indian, and Islamic styles. It was constructed over a period of 22 years, employing 20,000 workers and over 1,000 elephants. Which was the first UNESCO efforts to protect world heritage sites? In the 1960, UNESCO safely moved Abu Simbel to a new place high above the Aswan Dam.

3. Archaeological Site of Delphi (Greece)Delphi The ruins of Delphi are an important archaeological site in Greece. In ancient times, Delphi was considered the place where Heaven and Earth met. In the center of Delphi was the temple of the Greek God Apollo. Kings and common people came from all over to get advice and have their future told by the Oracle of Apollo, a spiritual woman who lived there. Delphi was also famous for its Pythian sports games. They were heldPythian sports games every four years, just like the Olympics of today.

Natural Heritage 1. Iguazu National Park (Argentina)Iguazu National Park Iguazu National Park is located on the northern border of Argentina. The park includes one of the most spectacular natural wonders in South America: Iguazu Falls. Taller than Niagara Falls and twice as wide (as Niagara Falls), Iguazu Falls consists of 270 waterfalls spread out over 2.7 kilometers along the Iguazu River. The surrounding jungle has more than 2,000 species of plants and is home to diverse wildlife. Across the river lies Brazil, so visitors can also enjoy Iguazu Falls from the Brazilian side. What role did Delphi play in ancient Greece? The Oracle of Apollo gave advice to kings and common people and told their future?

2. Hierapolis-Pamukkale (Turkey)Hierapolis-Pamukkale Pamukkale, meaning Cotton Castle, is one of the most extraordinary natural wonders in Turkey. Pamukkale’s ‘frozen’ waterfalls and pools were formed over thousands of years as mineral-rich spring water flowed down a high mountain wall and left behind large amounts of calcium. Here, too, is the site of the ancient city of Hierapolis, where many interesting ruins can be found, including hot baths, temples, and other Greek and Roman monuments.

3. Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes * (Korea)Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes In June 2007, Jeju Island became South Korea’s first natural heritage site to be added to the World Heritage List. Covering over 10% of the island, the heritage site actually consists of three separate areas. Geomunoreum, one of the finest lava tube systems in the world; Seongsan Ilchulbong, a huge bowl-like mountain formed during a volcanic eruption; and 1,950-meter high Mt. Halla, the highest mountain in South Korea. These three sites are extremely beautiful and provide an extraordinary record of the geological history of the Earth.Geomunoreum It’s because Jeju Island is are extremely beautiful and provides an extraordinary record of the geological history of the Earth. Why do you think Jeju Island has been added to the World Heritage List?

Protecting Our Heritage Protecting and rescuing world heritage sites are urgent tasks that require everyone’s help and cooperation. Around the world, many sites are threatened by war, theft, pollution, uncontrolled development, and natural disasters. Currently more than 30 cultural and natural sites have been placed on UNESCO’s list of endangered world heritage sites, including such places as Samarra Archaeological City in Iraq, the Old City of Jerusalem, and the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador. What the list aims to do is draw the world’s attention to the critical need of protecting these sites. Indeed, our world heritage sites are not just a legacy that has been left to us by our ancestors, but also a precious treasure that we must pass on to our own children and their children. We should draw the world’s attention to the critical need of protecting the endangered world heritage sites. What efforts can be made to protect world heritage sites?
