Developing sustainable and cost effective compute platforms for NREN PRESENTED BY EJOVI AROR GROUP MD IPNX NIGERIA LIMITED 25 th NOVEMBER 2013

3
NREN HIGH LEVEL NREN - a high-speed data network between research institutes in the country. Given Nigeria is quite large, research institutes in close proximity, like OAU, Oshogbo, Ilesa, Ibadan, are forming clusters for local collaboration. These clusters will then be interconnected to form the NREN, and provide access to regional and global research networks, such as the West African Research and Education Network (WACREN), GÉANT2, the European Academic Network and Internet2 in the USA.
4
NREN HIGH LEVEL (cont’d) A National REN or simply NREN is responsible, on a national basis, for the provision of data communications networks and services to the research and education community of its country. It will connect to other networks at regional levels It is usually distinguished by support for a high-speed backbone network, often offering dedicated channels for individual research projects. A State REN such as the OSUN-REN is a subset of the National REN, while a City REN such as IFE-REN is a subset of the OSUN-REN.

STATE OF THE NIGERIAN EDUCATIONAL SECTOR About 500+ tertiary institutions in the country including: – federal universities (36), – state universities (36), – private universities (41), – teaching hospitals, – research institutes, – colleges of education, – polytechnics, – Schools of nursing, – colleges of agriculture, – schools of health technology.
7
STATE OF THE NIGERIAN EDUCATIONAL SECTOR (cont’d) Most of them use VSAT technologies for internet access. Bandwidth capacities range from 128kbps to 200mbps. Many have no campus backbone. All have access laboratories ranging from 10 to 100+ computers for students access. Several have networks using wireless, UTP and/or fiber cables. Network content and services include wireless (virtually all universities have one), email services with local (edu.ng) domains, digital Libraries, students Portals
8
LONG TERM FIBRE NETWORK ACCESS Nigeria REN should be provided long-term access to fiber networks throughout the country in order to maintain low operational cost of the network. In order to achieve this, a long term collaboration with leading telecom operators should be established to provide and maintain the NREN infrastructure. Fibre optics cable is the fastest means of transmitting data. A single strand of fibre cable can transmit up to 100 gigabits per sec, making it possible to simultaneously carry video, internet and telephone calls and provide access to high performance computing resources.

REN COMPUTING ATTRIBUTES Usually bespoke built for purpose applications Very commonly compute resource intensive in CPU, storage and network requirements Heterogeneous - requirements and applications would differ from one user to another Extensive use of open source tools and applications
10
CLOUD COMPUTING Definition – “a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on- demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g. networks, servers, storage, applications and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction” Source: US NIST
11
CLOUD COMPUTING CONT’D NIST definition lists some key characteristics – On demand self-service – Network Access – Resource Pooling – Rapid Provisioning and release (Elasticity) – Measured Service Credit: Eucalyptus

SUGGESTED APPROACH Adopt common cloud architecture across REN members Implement cloud computing systems in each member institution as resources allow Leverage fiber network to pool cloud resources for optimal utilization and compute intensive tasks Leverage public clouds for overflow needs
