Medicinal Chemistry Lecture – I Introduction and Course Overview Joseph O. Oweta B. Pharm (MUST)

Overview The discipline of medicinal chemistry is devoted to the discovery and development of new therapeutic agents. Emphasis is on natural and synthetic products. Less emphasis on inorganic molecules like trace elements and radiopharmaceuticals and… More on organic molecules with increasingly specific pharmacological properties

Overview Medicinal chemistry is concerned with chemistry, synthesis, structure activity relationships, properties and uses of drugs of carbon compounds To understand medicinal chemistry, it is necessary to consider the physicochemical properties of drugs…and drug product.

Overview Medicinal chemistry was defined by IUPAC specified commission as “it concerns the discovery, the development, the identification and the interpretation of the mode of action of biologically active compounds at the molecular level”.

Course Description ….covers the molecular basis of action, metabolism and toxicity of drugs …provides an orientation to medicinally important nuclei and their nomenclature and principles of drug discovery and development. …relationship between molecular structure and biological action of drugs.

Course Objective To develop students ability to relate chemical structures of drugs to biological activity and metabolism and drug discovery and development

Mode of Delivery Lectures and Practicals Mode of Assessment Continuous Assessment = 30% Final Examination = 70%

Course Learning Objectives At the end of this course you should be able to: – Describe the physical and chemical properties of drugs or a group of drugs – Relate the chemical structure of the drug(s) to biological activity. – Apply different synthetic routes for discover and development of drugs – Illustrate the different identification. Purification and assay procedures
