Essential Question: What are the different ways in which we can describe the velocity of a moving object? Science 7

Next Test Date: Science “Motion and Forces” Unit Test Tuesday, May 10

HOMEWORK: April 6, 2016 Complete “Speed Sample Problems” sheet for TOMORROW If the sheet is not ENTIRELY DONE ACCORDING TO ALL OF THE DIRECTIONS, you will not receive credit for it.

Motion: Vocabulary This is when an object changes its position over a period of time. MOTION This is where an object is located in three-dimensional space POSITION This is the point from which you are observing an object in motion. A change to this can make a moving object appear not to move. REFERENCE POINT This measurement describes how quickly the position of an object changes. The standard unit of measurement for this is meters per second (m/s) SPEED

Motion: FORMULAS Formula for calculating the SPEED of a moving object: Formula for calculating the DISTANCE traveled by a moving object Formula for calculating the amount of TIME it took a moving object to cover a certain distance.

Sample Speed Problem: A track star runs a 1600 meter race. They complete the race in 365 seconds. What was the runner’s average speed during the race?

Today’s Topic: What are some of the different ways we can describe the speed of a moving object?

What is a distance-time graph? Distance-time graphs can be used to show the speed of an object in motion The DISTANCE an object moved is plotted on the y-axis The TIME it took for an object to move will be on the x-axis The line will show the SPEED of the object

What is a distance-time graph? If the slope of the line (steepness) INCREASES, the speed of the object has INCREASED If the slope of the line (steepness) DECREASES, the speed of the object has DECREASED If the slope of the line is CONSTANT, the speed is CONSTANT If the line is FLAT, the object has STOPPED MOVING

Sample distance-time graph A car begins at a starting line. After two seconds, the car has traveled 10 meters After four seconds, the car has traveled 30 meters After six seconds, the car has traveled 70 meters After 8 seconds, the car has traveled 100 meters After 10 seconds, the car has traveled 110 meters

Sample distance-time graph Between what time intervals was the car traveling at the fastest speed? How do you know?

This measurement is the exact same thing as SPEED, but with a direction added to it. VELOCITY Speed only tells you how quickly an object changes position; Velocity tells you how quickly an object changes position and in what direction it is traveling Whenever the direction changes for a moving object, velocity has changed You can use the SAME FORMULA to calculate velocity and speed, so long as the object is not changing direction Velocity is an example of a VECTOR This is any type of measurement that includes both magnitude (a number) and a direction. VECTOR What is Velocity?
