Intro to War The first world war began in August 1914. It was directly triggered by the assassination of the Austrian archduke, Franz Ferdinand and his wife, on 28th June 1914 by Bosnian revolutionary, Gavrilo Princip.assassination revolutionary

Alliance An alliance is an agreement made between two or more countries to give each other help if it is needed. When an alliance is signed, those countries become known as Allies. These were important because they meant that some countries had no option but to declare war if one of their allies. declared war first.

Intro This event was, however, simply the trigger that set off declarations of war. The actual causes of the war are more complicated and are still debated by historians today.historians

Lesson Essential Question How did governmental, religious, intellectual, political, and economic factors cause the war to break out in 1914

Governmental The crisis came after a long and difficult series of diplomatic clashes between the Great Powers (Italy, France, Germany, the British Empire, the Austria-Hungarian Empire and Russia) over European and colonial issues in the decade before 1914 that had left tensions high Great Powers

Religious Factors many people say that religion was not a factor in World War 1 but it actually was. The cause of World War 1 was a visit to Serbia from Austria's Archduke where he was assassinated by one of the many angry Serbians who were mistreated by the Austrian Government who enforced higher taxes to pay for churches. So Austria invaded Serbia angering other countries which turned into everyone picking sides and fighting each other. So technically religion was a root cause of World War 1.

Intellectual The results of war had significant impacts on art. Works of art symbolized the feelings and thoughts of the common people. Propaganda in art was used to justify the war to the common people and to keep peoples hopes up in works such as posters. Many new arts movements were created. One arts movement was Surrealism and the other was cubism. With literature, World War I affected literature by people expressing fear and despair from the war in their literature. As a result of this, literature contained a great amount of these depressing feelings. Also, people had given up on the ideas of romanticism from the harsh reality of the war. Instead, they had picked up on an extreme realism that portrayed life from the bitterness of war. Another way people's beliefs on old ideas was a change from Victorian style writing, to more Europeans style.

Political Factors The circumstances leading up to World War I, was more politically complex. Alliance system Militarism Competition Nationalism

Economic Factors There were economic conflicts between Germany and Britain. There were also economic struggles between Germany and France. Germany and Austria also rivaled with Russia in the Balkans for commercial privileges.

Social Factors In many of the countries involved in WW1 there was serious industrial unrest in the years before 1914 and some historians think this may have been one reason among many) for some governments to welcome war as a distraction, as something to make everyone rally round the flag. Total war: A struggle in which the whole nation – its people, resources, institutions, and politics – were involved.
