C ITATION MEANS … Documenting information Giving credit to sources Listing sources used Providing “backup”

W HY IS CITATION USEFUL TO THE READER OF RESEARCH ? To check up on the writer if the text seems unreliable To do further reading if the topic is of interest To find more sources for an assignment

W HY SHOULD I CITE ?? Because it is the only way to use other people’s work without PLAGIARIZING

O THER BENEFITS OF CITATION INCLUDE … It shows the amount of research you’ve done. It strengthens your work by lending outside support to your ideas.

W HEN DO I NEED TO CITE ? Whenever…  you use direct quotations  you paraphrase  you make specific reference to the work of another  you use someone else’s ideas

Whenever what you are writing is considered common knowledge:  JFK was assassinated in Dallas, TX  The Declaration of Independence was signed July 4, 1776  Smoking causes lung cancer W HEN DON’T I NEED TO CITE ?

IN YOUR PAPER, YOU WILL USE BOTH DIRECT QUOTES AND PARAPHRASE PARAPHRASE = a restatement of a text or passage giving the meaning in a different form To avoid plagiarism, you must use UNIQUE WORDS and UNIQUE SENTENCE STRUCTURE.

BOTH DIRECT QUOTES AND PARAPHRASE REQUIRE In-text citations

Using a parenthetical citation or a footnote. Parenthetical citation is a brief individual source reference in parenthesis that appears in the body of the text as needed Footnotes are numbered notes at the bottom of the page that provide additional information about the quotation or material in the text. H OW DO I CITE ?

H OW WILL CITE MY SOURCES IN MY S OPH R ESEARCH P APER ? Using PARENTHETICAL CITATIONS AKA IN-TEXT CITATION

W HAT DOES A C ITATION PROVIDE TO MY READER ? YOU WILL LEARN ALL ABOUT PROPER CITATION LATER, BUT AS A PREVIEW: Citations give your readers the information necessary to find that source again…  author  title of work  name and location of publisher  date published  page numbers

I N THE M EDIA C ENTER, YOU WILL ALSO LEARN TO USE NOODLETOOLS TO WRITE A LIST OF SOURCES THAT IS FORMATTED IN PROPER MLA STYLE. It will look like this: Alkalay-Gut, Karen. "The Dream Life of Ms. Dog: Anne Sexton's Revolutionary Use of Pop Culture." College Literature 32.4 (2005): 50-73. Jstor. Web. 25 Aug. 2012. Annas, Pamela J. A Disturbance in Mirrors: The Poetry of Sylvia Plath. New York: Greenwood, 1988. Print. "Anne Sexton 1928-1974." Poetry Criticism. Vol. 79. 183-344. Bloom's Literary Reference Online. Web. 25 Aug. 2012.

YOU WILL ALSO USE NOODLETOOLS TO CONSTRUCT NOTECARDS The purpose of Notecards is to  help sort and organize information that you gather during the research process  keep track of source information  combine and reorganize ideas from different sources to facilitate a well-organized paper THERE WILL BE MUCH MORE ABOUT ALL OF THIS LATER—

Eventually you will be writing a thesis sentence, and sentence outline, but don’t worry yet. There will be...
