WATER POLLUTION SOURCES
2
Categories of water pollution Point source -can easily identify the source Nonpoint can’t identify the source of the pollutant. It may have occurred at another location and filtered, moved, to the current location.
3
1.Industry 4 Main Sources THERMAL Pollution Leaks into Ground Water Ocean dumping Eutrophication
4
1. Thermal Pollution When temperature in water increases Power Plants use water from lakes & rivers to cool their equipment down –Released water is warmer, but cleaner. However,… Warmer water reduces the O 2 in the water As temperature O 2 decreases This affects organisms in the water
5
2. GROUND WATER POLLUTION Gasoline, Sewage, Toxins
6
3. Ocean Pollution 88885% of all ocean pollution comes from land – c– c– c– cars leaking, littering, storm drains. CCCCruise Ships –a–a–a–are legally allowed to dump waste & garbage at sea Oil Tanker Spills
7
SPILLS FROM OIL TANKERS Affect Wildlife
8
4.Eutrophication Excess Nutrients in Water
9
Artificial Eutrophication- when humans cause the problem Over abundance of nutrients in H2O use of fertilizer nitrogen & detergents with phosphate Creates an algae bloom Eventually, the algae die and go to the benthic zone The bacteria in the benthos metabolize the algae take in O2 and give off CO 2. This can lead to a fish kill due to depleted O 2 in the water.
10
1. Over abundance of nutrients In the water from Fertilizer or detergents 3. The algae die & sink to the benthic zone in the H2O where bacteria are. 2. Leads to an Algae Bloom 4. Decomposer bacteria eat the Algae. The bacteria take in O2 & release CO2 5. Reduced O2 in H2O May kill fish & other organisms. Steps of Artificial Eutrophication
11
ESTUARIES
12
ESTUARY AREA WHERE FRESH WATER MIXES WITH SALT WATER WHERE THE TWO MEET RICH IN SEDIMENT, NUTRIENTS BECOMES A NUTRIENT TRAP PLANKTON IS ABUNDANT SHELL FISH & BIRDS LIVE & BREED IN THEM REEDS/GRASSES FILTER POLLUTANTS IN THEIR ROOTS THE PLANTS ALSO PREVENT EROSION OF THE LAND
13
ENDANGERED SPECIES WHEN an animal is threatened with extinction HOW do animals become endangered? HUNTING DISEASES HABITAT DESTRUCTION leading cause
14
WHY SAVE ENDANGERED SPECIES? MEDICINAL USES- TOP 100 drugs from PLANTS Balance food webs & diversity, –ECOSYSTEM is MAINTAINED If a KEYSTONE species is lost, example salmon, it could effect many other organisms in the food web.
