2 Establish Rules & Routines ▪ Develop classroom rules consistent with school rules and which administrators will support. - rules need to be within student control to accomplish - limited in number, clear and specific about observable behaviors ▪ Establish routines and procedures to handle daily classroom business such as: - beginning and ending of class expectations for attendance, noise, seating, dismissal, etc - distributing and collecting materials, papers, and equipment - setting up and running audio-visual equipment. ▪ Rules need to be written, posted, and enforceable by the teacher. Teach the students the rules and routines. Explain your expectations.

3 Create A Good Learning Environment ▪ Make the classroom a place where students trust the teachers and peers and believe it’s safe to take risks. -It’s okay to ask questions when they don’t understand something, and they’ll receive support they need to handle challenges. ▪ Organize learning so that students work together and help one another. - Arrange small group activities in which students help one another to understand course materials. ▪ Provide students with choices and opportunities to take responsibilities in the classroom. - Create jobs and responsibilities for students and rotate these periodically.

4 Teaching Strategies ▪ Be clear and concise when giving instructions. ▪ Avoid telling too many things to too many people at one time. ▪ Speak clearly and in language appropriate to the students’ age level. ▪ Cultivate your sense of humor. It is a stress reliever and makes learning fun. ▪ Be yourself. Allow your students to see you as a real, thinking, feeling person for whom music has make a difference.

5 Effective Motivational Behaviors ♪ Provide extra help to students and always be available to answer questions. ♪ Select repertoire that challenges the musical ability of students but is attainable with effort. ♪ Encourage students to share information on musical subjects about which they are knowledgeable. ♪ Provide students with performance opportunities that allow them to discover new musical information.
