4 www.cirtl.net Excellent, Excellent, Very Good, Very Good The need for large-scale integration of high-quality pedagogical training in the graduate education of future STEM faculty has been a pressing need for decades with little systematic change across institutional and disciplinary boundaries. The proposed effort is admirably ambitious in its goals, decisively extensive in its reach, historically grounded in research-based practices, authentically collaborative between STEM and higher education experts, and unusually cross-disciplinary in its inclusiveness across STEM disciplines. CIRTL and its many stakeholders have been consistent leaders in the U.S. for many years, not only in providing high quality pedagogical professional development for STEM graduate students and post-doctoral fellows, but also in engaging in high-quality evaluation, self-assessment, and longitudinal research on their own efforts. While both the complexity of the proposed effort and its budget are high, so is the likelihood of widespread instigation of change. Of all the possible efforts in reforming undergraduate STEM education for the long term in the U.S., I see a variety of strengths that cause me to strongly support investment in the proposed effort. The goal to engage an additional 24 institutions that would collectively integrate pedagogical professional into the scientific training of ~7,000 STEM trainees each year over the next five years, yielding ~11,000 future science faculty, could potentially change the pedagogical stance of a generation of college and university STEM faculty.

5 www.cirtl.net Excellent, Excellent, Very Good, Very Good [The proposal team has] put together a well designed proposed effort that could fundamentally change the pedagogical skill set of a large number of future faculty across the STEM disciplines. The proposed activities have the potential to meet the perennial call to integrate formal, research-based, pedagogical training into the training experiences of all future scientists. The assembled leadership team, cohort of institutions, professional development model, and research and evaluation plans are strong. While there are a variety of issues that could be further clarified, the proposed effort is highly worthy of support.

6 www.cirtl.net Reviewer question: “Strategic use of Centers for Teaching and Learning could accomplish all that is being proposed at each university. What is the added value of being part of this network? A case is not made for the value added [of a CLT] being part of the CIRTL network.” Thoughts: 1)What are barriers to your CLT “just accomplishing your proposal goals by yourself”? 2) Don’t focus on the funding per se. Focus on the advantages to programs, impact, and outcomes of being part of the network. 3) Avoid generic text. What is the advantage of being part of the *CIRTL* Network? Integrate mention of core ideas if possible. Responses wrt Centers for Learning and Teaching

7 www.cirtl.net Overview: - Premise: The status of our NSF funding will not be resolved long before the meeting, and likely not even by the meeting. - Topics: Local and cross-Network LC developments underway (the fun part!) Operation given delayed NSF funding Network design and operation in the absence of external funding Additional external funding (whatever the NSF outcome) - Participants: Institutional Leaders – make every effort! 1 or 2 participants from each university Fall 2012 Network Meeting College Park, MD October 11-12
