2 William Lyon Phelps William Lyon Phelps ( ) was an American educator, literary critic and author. He served as a professor of English at Yale University On April 6, 1933, he delivered this speech during a radio broadcast. His reverence for books was not shared by everyone, especially those in Nazi Germany. On May 10, 1933, the Nazis had staged an event unseen since the Middle Ages as young German students from universities, formerly regarded as among the finest in the world, had gathered in Berlin and other German cities to burn books with "un-German" ideas. Does this change you reading of the speech?

3 What is argument?

4 The basics of argument Logical reasoning for main idea
Technology is a positive tool for teens or Technology allows students to receive a higher quality education. Analysis of claims Argue for your claim and against others Reliance on clear evidence Evaluation of sources

5 Counterarguments It’s not enough to bring up the other side
A good writer considers, weighs, and refutes counterarguments. Refuting shows the argument is inaccurate, irrelevant, or insufficient. This strengthens and clarifies the original position.

6 Counterargument Some may feel that students should not have the right to wear back packs during school since it will be a distraction. This is not true as students are never distracted. Is this a strong enough counter argument? Fix it!

7 Counterargument Some say that students will be too distracted when they have their back packs with them. While there may be a period of adjustment, students will be able to focus during class. They have been able to stay on task when bringing laptop cases to class. The management of the class should be the responsibility of the teacher as well.

8 Use of Sources Not enough to repeat the information
Analyze and read the information and the source Collect relevant information from multiple sources Assess whether or not those sources are credible and accurate Quote literature and nonfiction to support analysis, reflection, and research

9 Research Argument Based on this introduction, what is the main claim and what is reasoning behind it?

10 Which would we consider an argument? Why?
The bottom offers more reasoning, analysis The top is merely presenting Santiago as a character but not taking a side

11 The Perils Of Indifference Elie Wiesel
Claim: What does the writer want people to know, do, think, or believe? Reasons: In a sentence or two explain why he is making this claim Evidence: What facts, figures, statistics, quotations, expert analysis, etc. does he use? Acknowledge and Respond: Does he discuss, address, and respond to alternatives, criticisms, and objections? Read through once to get an understanding of it
