1 LESSON 4A – RESEARCH PROCESS Essential Question How can I ensure I follow the research process for my paper? Learning Outcomes - Students will: Preview – Crisis? Complete the first 2 stages of their research process Success Criteria I can form a research question, using both command and clarifying terms

2 PREVIEW What does Crisis mean? Can you think of an example of a “crisis” you experienced in the last week? So what do you think a Cold War Crisis means?

5 STEPS TO RESEARCH Step 1 – Search the encyclopedia/wikipedia to understand a bit more about your topic Step 2 – Form a question to answer Step 3 – Research to find the answer to your question Step 4 – As you research, add to your outline We will look more closely at each of these next

6 STEP 1 – SEARCH THE ENCYCLOPEDIA/WIKIPEDIA TO UNDERSTAND A BIT MORE ABOUT YOUR TOPIC Know a little bit about your topic before you research To get you started, wikipedia is fine, just to give you a basic understanding Why? This will allow you to be more specific on your internet searches You will not waste time reading pages that don’t have much to do with your topic Goal – Find out enough info to create a question that you can base your essay on Spend 5-10 minutes researching your topic

7 STEP 2 – FORM A QUESTION TO ANSWER Why? This will help guide your through out your research Keywords All students must include a Command Term and Clarifying terms Command Term – determine the type of answer you should give Analyze – explain the reasons Analyze the circumstances that would allow students to receive a 7 in History. Assess – which is the most significant Assess the significance of studying to achieving high scores on the IB. Evaluate – look at the strengths and weaknesses of the argument Evaluate the effect of not doing your homework in grade 10. To what extent – how much do you agree To what extent do you agree with the statement, “Grade 10 is the best class at ISG.”

17 PREVIEW Do you think you are a trustworthy person? Has someone ever asked you for directions and, not knowing the answer but not wanting to admit it, gave them wrong directions? For example, have you ever asked a teacher to go to the washroom and you didn’t really have to go, you just wanted to check a phone message? For example, have you ever had a friend tell you a secret, because they trusted you, but you told someone else? What are the characteristics of a trustworthy person?

27 REVIEW Take a look at the 3 previous essays you have written 1.Assess the reasons for why Germany lost WW2 2.Assess the reasons for the breakdown of the Grand Alliance 3.“The US policy of containment was justified.” To what extent do you agree with this statement. Take a look at the rubric Where did you receive high scores? How can you make sure to follow these same strategies this time? Where were your scores lower? How could you have corrected these problems?
