8  Write a paragraph explaining one reason why the US lost the Vietnam War.  Requirements  5~9 sentences  Topic and Concluding sentence  Only answers the question asked  Only use info from the textbooks 6 – All requirements + clearly connects STRONG facts to argument with vocab + all sentences support the thesis + extremely plausible, taking into consideration context 5– All requirements + ALWAYS uses clear and STRONG facts + vocab + all sentences support the thesis + somewhat plausible argument 4 – All requirements + usually uses facts to support argument + some vocab + most sentences support the thesis 3 – All requirements but rarely uses facts + some sentences support the thesis 1~2 – Missing requirements The Tet Offensive is the most important reason why LBJ didn’t seek re- election in 1968. The Tet Offensive was the Vietcong’s coordinated attack on various cities in South Vietnam. 85,000 Vietcong attacked cities in South Vietnam, but resulted in a lose for the VC with 45,000 deaths. The impact of this on the American public was that the Tet Offensive widened the credibility gap. For example, a CBS video showed VC forces attacking the US embassy in Saigon. This image went against what Gen. Westmoreland and the US gov’t said that the US had, “turned a corner in the war.” This widening of the credibility gap directly effected how the American public viewed Johnson.. For example, before the Tet Offensive, Johnson had a 50% approval rating. However after, his approval rating went down to 26%. Therefore, from this drop in approval ratings, as a result of the Tet Offensive, there was no way that Johnson would have run and won the 1968 presidential election.

Closing statement – state your CLEAR opinion In conclusion, for all these reasons, it would have been almost impossible for the US to succeed in Vietnam. Therefore, the anti-war movement, failed military tactics and anti-democratic actions of the Theiu government all led to the predictable failure of US offensive in Vietnam. The anti-war movement at home negatively impacted the overall support for the war, resulting in a lack commitment from politicians. The biggest factor leading to the American defeat was the inability of the Thieu government to win over the hearts and minds of the South Vietnamese population due to its corrupt nature and anti-democratic policies. An equally important factor were the failed military tactics of the US generals to counter the guerilla tactics of the Vietcong, which caused huge causalities amongst the American side.

17  Do you always have a Topic and Concluding sentence?  Are they similar?  Do you have 2~3 facts in each main body paragraph?  Did you prove your thesis?  Do you need to change it at all?  What would your score be based on this rubric? 6 – All requirements + clearly connects STRONG facts to argument with vocab + all sentences support the thesis + extremely plausible, taking into consideration context 5– All requirements + ALWAYS uses clear and STRONG facts + vocab + all sentences support the thesis + somewhat plausible argument 4 – All requirements + usually uses facts to support argument + some vocab + most sentences support the thesis 3 – All requirements but rarely uses facts + some sentences support the thesis 1~2 – Missing requirements
