2 Unitary Government power is held by one central authority Examples: Cuba, France, and the United Kingdom

3 Federal Government characterized by or constituting a form of government in which power is divided between one central and several regional authorities. Examples: Australia, Germany, Russia, Canada, Brazil, and Mexico

4 Confederation Government voluntary associations of independent states that, to secure some common purpose, agree to certain limitations on their freedom of action and establish some joint machinery of consultation or deliberation. Examples: United Nations, European Union, and Commonwealth of Nations

5 Simplified Definitions Unitary- central government runs the show(no power distribution) Federal- distribution of power throughout central and regional governments Confederation- voluntary agreement with power remaining with the individual states

6 Interesting Facts vast majority of governments in the world are unitary a government may have aspects of more than one system only 24 of the world’s 193 countries have Federal Governments yet 40% of the world’s population comes from these countries
