Future Trends Briefing for Mid-Term Evaluation 22 Apr 2016

Essential items for Mid-Term Evaluation Presentation Each team is expected to identify and record TEN potential solutions to your Fundamental Problem in its online portfolio. Each potential solution should be accompanied by at least THREE pieces of research. Since each team only has 7 mins of presentation time + 3 mins of Q & A time for the oral presentation, each team will only need to orally present your Fundamental Problem, followed by FOUR of your best potential solutions and at least ONE piece of research for each solution. This will be followed by FIVE criteria and a decision matrix to apply your criteria and select your best solution. The evaluators are at liberty to ask to see the other potential solutions you have crafted as well as other pieces of research you have found. They can also ask to see your online portfolio.

First Slide Group Number Project Title (Please indicate to the judges if your finalised project title does not match with the one published on EMB) Names of Project Members Second Slide Fundamental Problem – make sure this is your final and best version

Changes to Project Titles I have noted these changes to Project Titles: 11-02 A Global City-zenship: An Uncertain Future 11-03 Together, Singa-Foreigns! 11-06 Preserving Singapore’s Heritage 11-15 Citizens and City-zens 11-25 Global Citizenship 11-26 Project Integration: Foreigners

Fundamental Problem - recap Constituents of an FP -The FP must have a condition phrase, key verb phrase (that is not absolute in nature), purpose, and future scene parameters (time, location).

Fundamental Problem - recap Constituents of an FP -The FP must have a condition phrase, key verb phrase (that is not absolute in nature), purpose, and future scene parameters (time, location). Given that there appears to be a foreigner-local divide seen from their lack of contact, increased conflict and segregation ( CP ), how might we increase interactions between foreigners and locals ( KVP ) so that the country can be more united ( P ) in the year 2032 and beyond in Singapore? ( FSP )

How to word a potential solution Tip #1: Address the Key Verb Phrase and Purpose of your FP. Any potential solution serves to attempt to solve your FP, and the only way for your potential solution to be RELEVANT is for it to tackle the KVP and Purpose of your FP. Simple but oft-underestimated tip: Have the FP right in front of you as you devise potential solutions

How to word a potential solution Tip #2: Never ever have more than 1 KVP in your FP e.g. how might we increase interactions between locals and foreigners and promote mindful speech among them… …Because every single potential solution will then have to address all the KVPs. This increases the possibility of your solutions not being entirely relevant, and you also narrow the range of solutions that you can adopt.

How to word a potential solution Tip #3: State your potential solution in a definite manner. E.g. “we WILL do X”. While your potential challenges in Step 1 were stated as possibilities, your solution ideas should be stated as definite in nature.

How to word a potential solution Tip #4: Be futuristic but be humane and realistic at the same time Solution ideas as far as possible should be humane (e.g. implanting a “respectful” chip into a new-born baby isn’t exactly humane. Deporting all foreigners would not be a realistic thing to do considering the abrupt impact on the economy ).

How to word a potential solution Tip #5: You will be credited for elaborating in detail (not amounting to an action plan), so consider the 5Ws and 1H. Who – who or what person/group will implement the solution (be creative, give yourself a futuristic name – you can adopt a different identity for each solution, since you have not been given a specific role in this scenario) What – the solution idea in itself How – describe how the solution will work Why – explain why the solution will solve the FP (KVP and Purpose) Where – describe relevant places for the solution to occur When – designate a timeline, a specific date of completion, timeframes within the parameters of the scenario.

Research for your potential solution Note: Imaginative inventions are fun, but they must include how or why explanations. Creativity and the futuristic element are essential in this step, but an invention can ‟ t happen just because someone says it will. In order to be relevant, an explanation of HOW the invention will accomplish its function should be included. Besides, solutions don’t need to always be inventions.

Research for your potential solution Some types of research -Technology in its infancy that can be further developed for a particular solution idea -Concepts / theories to explain why the solution idea is going to be viable. -Historical solutions analogous to the team’s You must have at least 3 pieces of research for each solution, even though you will only verbally present 1 – 2 of them.

Tip: Diverge, before you converge

Sample Solution Sample solution based on this FP: Given that there appears to be a foreigner- local divide seen from their lack of contact, increased conflict and segregation ( CP ), how might we increase interactions between foreigners and locals ( KVP ) so that the country can be more united ( P ) in the year 2032 and beyond in Singapore? ( FSP )

Sample Solution We, the Restauranteurs Of Foreigners / Locals (ROFL) [WHO], will offer alluring discounts at our 450 member restaurants island- wide [WHERE] when diners share their tables with others of different nationalities [WHAT]. This will invariably place foreigners and locals in situations that encourage conversation and hence increase interactions between them [HOW]. This solution could be implemented by the end of 2032 [WHEN]. Given that there appears to be a foreigner-local divide seen from their lack of contact, increased conflict and segregation ( CP ), how might we increase interactions between foreigners and locals ( KVP ) so that the country can be more united ( P ) in the year 2032 and beyond in Singapore? ( FSP )

Developing criteria to choose your solutions Formula: Which solution will be the (SUPERLATIVE ADJECTIVE) for (WHO) so that (WHY)? This WHY part should directly address your KVP. e.g. Which solution will be the fastest to implement (superlative adjective) for the Government of Singapore (WHO) so that the increase in interactions amongst locals and foreigners can come quickly enough to arrest this trend of segregation (WHY)? Design 5 criteria.

Poor criteria Formula: Which solution will be the (SUPERLATIVE ADJECTIVE) for (WHO) so that (WHY)? e.g. Which solution will be the best? (DUH) Which solution will be the most effective? (DUH) Which solution will be the cheapest? (generic, not customized)

Design a decision matrix Rank your 10 solution ideas in a decision matrix based on the 5 criteria you have devised.

Please stay back for a short chat… 11-09 (Steve Chiow’s group) 11-13 (Ryan Low’s group) 11-18 (Ian Tan’s group) 11-22 (Jarvis Chiam’s group)
