1 Student Email The Do’s and Don’ts of E-mail in Liberty Public Schools

2 Reasons For Student Email Technology Curriculum – Objective #11 –“Interview experts and others using on-line collaborative tools to investigate content area topics and issues and to develop solutions or products for audiences inside and outside the classroom.” Discuss: 1. How is the use of school / professional email different from personal email use? 2. Why are both important?

3 Reasons For Student Email Comm. Arts classes will be using the anti- plagiarism program “Turn It In” –Students must have an email address to turn in assignments –This program helps teachers determine if the students’ work is original or borrowed from someone else either intentionally or unintentionally.

4 Reasons For Student Email Teachers should model safe and appropriate ways to use email; therefore teachers may email students: –Grade reports –Classroom newsletters –Makeup work –Test reminders –Paper edits –Other

5 Protection For Students using Liberty Public Schools Email Teachers and district administrators reserve the right to monitor all use of student e-mail accounts. What you send and receive is not private. Content of all e-mail must abide by all school guidelines and policies. Consequences of inappropriate use of student email may include, but are not limited to; loss of computer privileges, alternative assignments, detention, ISS, and OSS.

6 Protection For Students using Liberty Public Schools Email Non-district email will be blocked for students during the school day beginning in 06-07 –Educational Web mail will be allowed (taking online classes) –Hotmail, Yahoo, etc. will be blocked during the school day.

7 Students Using District Email Students in grades 5 – 12 will be using Liberty Public Schools email as part of the Instructional Technology Curriculum. A letter to the parents will be sent home explaining how and why student email will be used. Parents will receive an explanation of discipline procedures for misuse of student email.

8 LPS Email is Not A timely way for parents to contact students during the day. Parents should still make contact through the main office. A way to forward “e-junk” including chain letters, urban myths, free offers, jokes, etc. A way for students to register on unauthorized web sites. Doing so could result in “Spam” e-mail coming into the network. Discuss: What are appropriate uses of email?

9 Student Email Address Student’s email address will be the following: username@student.liberty.k12.mo.us Example: tsmith@student.liberty.k12.mo.us Students will be able to access their email from home. Junior high and senior high students will be able to use their email 24/7. This is designed to extend the school day and allow work on school projects when convenient. Middle school and elementary school students will be able to access email from 7:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

10 Activating Student Email Student email addresses will be activated on September 5, 2006. Beginning on this date, teachers may begin requiring email use as part of the required curriculum. Student misuse will not only result in disciplinary action but also alternative assignments.

11 “Netiquette” of Email Communication on district email should: 1.Use standard English instead of the short cuts and abbreviations used in I.M and text messaging. 2. Use standard spelling. 3. Follow rules of grammar for punctuation, capitalization and sentence structure.
