Learning another language and being able to communicate in it requires… Majority of class time will be dedicated language use. Students must practice at home! “The end” is for students to be able to communicate in another language, not to say/write words or verbs in isolation
6
Here is what you should see at home on a regular basis… Vocabulary flash cards Practicing conjugations Visiting websites for practice Completing a variety of homework assignments Listening to movies and music in French *These strategies should be used regularly, not just before a test or quiz or when a specific assignment is given

How can I help my student improve language skills at home ? Have your child read aloud Encourage them to teach you and family members Encourage them to use phrases, new language with multi-lingual peers & neighbors Check SchoolFusion Quiz your child using their notes

How can I help my student improve language skills at home ? Encourage use of authentic audio in French (examples: a news broadcast, an interview, a song, a television show, a movie, French apps, YouTube…)

Learning another language and being able to communicate in it requires… Teachers to use the target language 90% of the time and make it understandable without using English First vocabulary unit : classroom phrases Teachers will use pictures and actions Teachers will use level appropriate language and cognates Teachers will repeat and revisit information as needed If your student says “my teacher speaks to me in French”, that is a good thing!
10
How will my child be assessed? All assignments will be weighted one, two or three times in the grade book: Typically, small quizzes count one time. Large quizzes count two times. Major tests count three times. Projects weight will be determined prior to completion. Students will be assessed on speaking, reading, writing, listening, vocabulary, grammar and culture.
