2 Climate changes have been recorded in: Deep-sea sediment cores Ice cores from Greenland and Antarctica Tree rings- dendrochronology Pollen records in lake sediments Corals from tropical oceans

4 Antarctic ice cores 11,500 feet deep extend back 850,000 years and contain air bubbles, which record atmospheric carbon dioxide content. 402 ppm 2015 – 34% increase

5 GLOBAL CARBON DIOXIDE EMISSIONS EVEN IF WE WERE ABLE TO COMPLETELY ELIMINATE ALL CARBON EMISSIONS TOMORROW, WE WOULD STILL FEEL THE EFFECTS OF PAST EMISSIONS FOR CENTURIES TO COME.

7 Likely Local Climate Change Effects based on climate models and historic trends 1] higher temperatures 2] summer water shortages and longer droughts 3] increase in wild land fires 4] more concentrated winter rainfall and more flooding 5] sea-level rise with increased rates of coastal flooding and cliff erosion These would not be new events, but would likely occur more frequently and be more intense than in the past.

8 As the Earth has cooled and warmed, glaciers and ice sheets have advanced and retreated, and sea level has fallen and risen. 20,000 years ago, ~3% of the ocean’s water, some 10 million cubic miles, was transferred to the continents as ice. Sea level dropped about 400 feet (125 meters) and then rose again. 400 ft 375,000 years of sea-level fluctuations

29 Along with a continuing rise in sea level, climate change projects potential for more intense coastal storms with larger waves. Over past 22 years, average wave heights along central coast have increased 1.4 ft.
