2 How kings get to be kings
Must be IN the family of kings Rule by “divine right” Rule passes from father to son Some countries let daughters become “king” (monarch) If no sons or daughters…

3 Divine Right King’s ruled by “DIVINE RIGHT.”
That meat that people believed that God gave the kings the right to ruler over them.

5 Henry VII He was NOT in line to be king (he was cousins
He fought his cousin, Richard of York in a war called THE WAR OF ROSES His last name: Tudor Started the “Tudor line” of kings He married the _______ to the king he defeated Had two sons, two daughters They would all be officially heirs because of his marriage

6 Henry VII All of them will matter a lot after he dies

8 Henry VIII Henry VIII was much more “fun” than his dad
He went hunting, and competed against other kings in tournaments He had lots of girlfriends, too But, he was OBSESSED with having sons He died with only one… a sickly young boy All three of Henry VIII’s kids became kings (monarchs) of England First Edward Then “Bloody” Mary Then Elizabeth “the Virgin Queen Two versions of Anne Boleyn click click

9 EDWARD became king at age 10
He didn’t do much before he died at age 16 His advisors made the Church of England more like Luther’s church He was too young and too sickly to marry He had no kids Who would rule next?!

10 Mary became queen when she was older
She was raised a Catholic When she became queen, she brought the Catholic Church back She married Philip of Spain She killed anyone who protested Protestants would later called her “BLOODY MARY” because she killed so many protestants She died after five years – no kids

11 ELIZABETH … was the only child of Anne Boleyn
But, became queen and changed the Church back to Protestant she ruled so that you could be any religion you want She encouraged trade and culture She ruled 42 years 4 times as long as Mary and Edward combined The whole Elizabethan era is named after her

12 Big events during Elizabeth:
Shakespeare and other arts flourished England became rich from trade Elizabeth challenged Spain, the mightiest empire, and won! England established its first colony: VIRGINIA, named after her She never did get married She never did have kids
