3 Abolition A complete end to slavery

4 Abolitionist Movement People worked together to end slavery, many also took risks to help slaves escape. – Some were against slavery for religious reasons – slavery was morally wrong – it went against the right to liberty for which the American Revolution had been fought

5 How did the Abolitionists Spread their Message? Antislavery Literature – William Lloyd Garrison a white man – published an abolitionist newspaper called the Liberator

6 Frederick Douglass a former slave who escaped slavery at the age of 20 He published a newspaper called the North Star

7 Uncle Tom’s Cabin an anti-slavery novel written by Harriet Beecher Stowe I want NORTHERNS to know the CRUELITY of SLAVERY like they have never seen before! After reading, many Northerners joined the Abolitionist Movement.

8 What was the Underground Railroad? a network of secret escape routes enslaved African Americans followed to reach freedom in the North – Harriet Tubman was a courageous “conductor” of the “railroad” I know a secret way to freedom!

9 What was Bleeding Kansas (1856)? As a result of the Kansas-Nebraska Act.... – The population of Kansas was large enough to vote for a government. – 2 governments were formed due to unfair voting. – 700 pro-slavery men attacked the capital of the anti-slavery government robbed people and destroyed property – Anti-slavery group murdered 5 pro-slavery men Pro-Slavery Government Anti-Slavery Government

10 What was The Lincoln-Douglas Debates? U.S. Senate seat in Illinois Lincoln lost the election, but people began to think that Lincoln would make a good president in the election of 1860. I think PEOPLE in the territories SHOULD DECIDE if they want SLAVERY OR NOT! Stephen Douglas – Democrat I think slavery should NOT exist in the territories! Abraham Lincoln— Republican

11 John Brown’s Raid on Harper’s Ferry (1859) John Brown = abolitionist Led armed men in Kansas who murdered 5 pro-slavery men.  Attacked an armory building in order to provide weapons to slaves to rebel against slave owners. His raid failed and John Brown and is men were hanged.

12 Election of 1860 Lincoln won the presidential election, even thought he didn’t win any votes in the southern states. – Northern states had a greater population than the southern states. – Southern states felt they were powerless in government – had a greater chance of being forced by Northerners to end slavery SO......
