2 W D 4 Outline  Partners.  Objectives.  Structure.  Deliverables.  Non-Technical Drivers.  Innovations.  Benefits.  Workshop. 4WARD Workshop @ ICT Mobile Summit June 9 th, 2008

3 W D 4 Partners  Ericsson, DE  Nokia Siemens Networks, FI  Alcatel-Lucent, DE  Deutsche Telekom, DE  Telecom Italia, IT  Telefonica I+D, ES  IST – Tech. Univ. Lisbon, PT 4WARD Workshop @ ICT Mobile Summit June 9 th, 2008

4 W D 4 Objectives  WP 1 covers the Business Innovation, Regulation, and Dissemination aspects that are key to all WPs.  It focuses especially on society, business, and governance issues, and ensures that their respective requirements are properly addressed by all technical solutions.  Dissemination is done by publishing results in international journals, conferences, and a book.  Those outside the scientific community will be reached via white papers and a video. 4WARD Workshop @ ICT Mobile Summit June 9 th, 2008

5 W D 4 Structure  T1.1 - Business Strategy To understand and assess:  how new technology may foster new usages and business models;  how new usages and societal trends may require new or enhanced technologies. To investigate implications of policy and governance on networking technologies (including regulation), vice versa.  T1.2 - Dissemination and External Collaboration To liaise exchange of ideas and promote common visions on future networking with other initiatives. To disseminate and exploit results. 4WARD Workshop @ ICT Mobile Summit June 9 th, 2008

6 W D 4 Deliverables  D-1.1 (M10, Oct. 2008): First project-wide assessment on the non-technical drivers.  D-1.2 (M18, June 2009): Final project-wide assessment on the non-technical drivers.  D-1.3 (M24, Dec. 2009): Publishable manuscript of the 4WARD book. 4WARD Workshop @ ICT Mobile Summit June 9 th, 2008

7 W D 4 Non-Technical Drivers  In order to properly cover the business aspects of the Future Internet (FI), the project investigates how the major Non-Technical Drivers will impact on the transition from the R&D stage to the real deployment of the innovations studied in 4WARD.  Three Non-Technical Drivers have been identified: Usage & Services. Socio-Economics. Policy & Governance. 4WARD Workshop @ ICT Mobile Summit June 9 th, 2008

8 W D 4 Usage & Services  Work items are: Understand the ideas of each WP on the topic. Study of impacts on application services of end users (business & residential). Study of impacts on network services of end users (business & residential). Study of impacts on network services of network operators. Study of impacts on service providers (and other players). 4WARD Workshop @ ICT Mobile Summit June 9 th, 2008

9 W D 4 Socio-Economics  It addresses several items: Social, e.g., living in a city. Economic, e.g., connecting businesses that have many interactions with each other in the value chain. Communication, e.g., the Future Internet should “include access to "old internet", ensuring network compatibility with it, and allow the Internet of Things. Environmental, e.g., operation in an energy saving environment. Market, e.g., services that may be most popular and will help shaping the Future Internet. 4WARD Workshop @ ICT Mobile Summit June 9 th, 2008

10 W D 4 Policy & Governance  Some key principles to pay attention are: The decentralised and collaborative process of core resource management, and of scalable network. The distributed/decentralised open architecture. The open, non-proprietary, nature of the core Internet standards. Private sector competition and innovation. The end-to-end principle: the neutrality of the Internet. 4WARD Workshop @ ICT Mobile Summit June 9 th, 2008

11 W D 4 Impact (1)  The study of the impact of Non-Technical Drivers includes: Society  Virtual environments, mobility aspects, reachability.  Need for security, balance of privacy vs. sharing. Business  Market opportunities.  Business models and value chains. Policy and Governance  Regulation.  Non-discriminatory access. 4WARD Workshop @ ICT Mobile Summit June 9 th, 2008

12 W D 4 Impact (2)  The impact of Non-Technical Drivers will arise also from technical issues, e.g.: addressing / naming, security, virtualisation, mobility, bandwidth, quality of service, … 4WARD Workshop @ ICT Mobile Summit June 9 th, 2008

13 W D 4 Focus  The focus within the project is to: Drive innovations into the network layer to create new socio-economic opportunities.  This will be achieved by researching on: Network virtualisation. Embedded network management capability. Functionally rich communication paths. Network of information. 4WARD Workshop @ ICT Mobile Summit June 9 th, 2008

14 W D 4 The Feedback Loop 4WARD Workshop @ ICT Mobile Summit June 9 th, 2008 Policy Governance Regulation Technologies Business Models Socio-economic Service Usage Regulation scenarios -Scope and depth of Regulation (light, strong) Business scenarios (WP1) run under different regulation scenarios Requirements New concepts New technologies - Focus areas Recommendations for - policies, new governance areas, regulation

15 W D 4 Innovations (1)  New economic and business models: Viable business models for a successful introduction of technical innovations from other WPs. Find effective ways for transfer of results from Clean Slate "Future IP" approach into real IP world. Extend existing business models, by considering new players and new forms of revenues. Faster commercial exploitation of the new network systems, through better understanding of the dynamics of the feedback loop: technologies, business models, Policy & Governance & Regulation. 4WARD Workshop @ ICT Mobile Summit June 9 th, 2008

16 W D 4 Innovations (2)  New regulation concepts and structures: New regulation concepts, e.g., for network neutrality. Virtual networks demand for new regulation approaches. International Internet business relations demand for world wide coordinated regulation.  Worldwide harmonisation of the Future Internet: European Initiative: Future Internet Assembly. Alignment with non-European initiatives, like GENI,... Initiation of Future Internet tests and verifications on common test platforms. 4WARD Workshop @ ICT Mobile Summit June 9 th, 2008

17 W D 4 Expected Benefits (1)  New economic and business models: Enhance local, regional and national markets towards global business. Create market opportunities for new players, small- and medium sized businesses. Create opportunities for new business players. Create cooperation strategies for established actors. Shift business from physical world to Internet. 4WARD Workshop @ ICT Mobile Summit June 9 th, 2008

18 W D 4 Expected Benefits (2)  Regulation: Enable fair and reliable market conditions for every player. Enable low entry barriers for new players on the market. Create new business opportunities for new players (e.g.. through regulation of virtual networks). Enable customers to profit from a broadened range of service offers.  Future Internet harmonisation: Strengthens European position in world wide market. Worldwide, enables global acceptance of Future Internet. 4WARD Workshop @ ICT Mobile Summit June 9 th, 2008

19 W D 4 1 st BIRD Workshop  The 1 st WP1 BIRD Workshop is being organised: It will address Society, Business, and Governance.
