Cold mass procurement, status and plan, QA-QC H. Prin With contribution from S. Becle, O. Housiaux, R. Principe, J.-L. Rudeiros Fernandez, F. Savary 3 rd International Review on the 11 T Dipoles at Collimator Section for the HL-LHC 6-8 April 2016 CERN

Outline  Cold Masses Overall Schedule  Cold Masses Main Components  What is already available, on-going procurement, manufacturing to be launched (MCS!)  Cold Masses Project  Associated Equipment Codes  WP11 project structure and Hardware Baseline  The same documents and items will be used in WP11 Project Structure (lifetime of the project) and the Hardware Baseline (long term archiving recipient)  Document Types  E-BOM  Cold Masses Procurement  On going procurement for the 1st prototype  Shells and laminations timeline  Components that do not require Divisional Order  Procurement for the 4xfirst cold masses (after prototype)  Procurement is linked to the lessons learnt with prototype assembly and testing. Nevertheless some procurement could be started earlier (foreseen early 2017) 3rd International Review on the 11 T Dipoles at Collimator Section for the HL-LHC H. Prin2

Outline  Quality Assurance  Assembly procedures and documentation adapted from main dipole and insertion quadrupole cold masses  Interface specification is under preparation  Implication of LMF-QA team to share the QA procedures writing and the QC registration of results in EDMS  EDMS Item navigator view, documentation handling (drawing, folders, fabrication & control procedures, reports…)  From QA to QC  LHC-LBH-FRM-0003 worksheet handled by LMF-QA that puts together all documentation from components procurement (QA) to reception (QC)  Quality Control  MTF Asset navigator view, documentation handling (sub-equipment, relevant data, relevant manufacturing steps, non conformity reports, manufacturing documentation, history)  Components logistics in the LMF Section  Risk and Mitigation  Summary 3rd International Review on the 11 T Dipoles at Collimator Section for the HL-LHC H. Prin3

Risk and Mitigation for the 1 st prototype and 4 associated cold masses  Risk:  Procurement is not found, e.g. 316LN as specified for the MB  Internal design is changed. Already procured pieces are no longer usable. New procurement to do  Interface design is changed. Idem.  Pieces from third-party is not available. Assembly cannot be achieved  Insulation pieces redesign due to dielectric (magnet leads proximity)  Mitigation:  Work with EN-MME to define new material specification with less procurement risk  Use as much as possible standard (interchangeable) elements  Internal design. Control 3 to detect impact on procurement. Control 2 is enough if checks on procurement is done at the same time as the functional check.  Interface design. Control 3 is mandatory to detect impact. ECR might be needed to track changes  Possible use of existing spare parts with adaptation?  On going studies and development on the 2-in-1 models to increase the current path and the insulation redundancy 3rd International Review on the 11 T Dipoles at Collimator Section for the HL-LHC H. Prin4

Risk and Mitigation for the 2 nd prototype and 8 associated cold masses 3rd International Review on the 11 T Dipoles at Collimator Section for the HL-LHC H. Prin5  Risk (on the top of previous risks):  Major change of design of collared coils implies change of the cold mass design  Mitigation:  to avoid a re-design of the cold mass, the interfaces must remain the same (length, diameter). Approval process (control 3) for the collared coils drawings is mandatory. Tooling issues will be addressed in F. Lackner’s talk

Summary  The 11T cold masses design for the first generation (RRP cable) is completed, the control process is started.  e-BOMs are generated thanks to CAD & PLM software and give a clear definition of the cold mass and sub-assemblies structure.  Management and follow-up tools exist and are mastered in the WP11 project structure and the Hardware Baseline.  Collaboration with LMF-QA led to a mastered Project Documentation accessible through many different points. Teamwork, collaborative working environment and daily exchanges insures an up-to-date and detailed information that can be shared between all the participants in the project.  Trained personal is required to ensure a draconian procurement follow-up (component availability in the firms and on the shelves, documentation, QC & QA…) 3rd International Review on the 11 T Dipoles at Collimator Section for the HL-LHC H.
