13 A Short History of Venezuela Colonized by the Spanish in the 18 th century. Became known as Gran Colombia. Simon Bolivar’s efforts lead to the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830. Venezuela gained independence from Spain July 5 th 1811. Oil was discovered and Western oil companies began playing a major roll, in politics and infrastructure development. County ruled by generally benevolent military strong men until 1959. Democratically elected governments have held power until the present. Hugo Chaves is elected President in1998, and things begin to change.
