ADCP’s in Action in Australia – 2015 Configuring ChannelMaster H-ADCPs for remote operation via dataloggers Richard Gardiner Senior Technical Officer Water Quality and Investigations

Who I am and what we do Why we do it How we do it Pros and Cons of this technique

Great Barrier Reef Catchment Loads Monitoring Program

Remote locations, based out of Brisbane, lack of local technical support Limited memory Failure to ‘wake up’ after prolonged power down Complete loss of configuration after power down Issues identified with deploying H-ADCPs

Unlimited memory Automatically take readings in the water (and only in the water) Real time data to web interface; – gauging selection – sample collection – confidence it’s working Off site data backup in case of disaster Benefits of connecting via SDI-12

Connecting via serial port as well

Taking readings via SDI-12 whenever H-ADCP is immersed Storing the entire H-ADCP configuration in the datalogger program Leaving the RS-232 connection to the H-ADCP in the datalogger at all times In the event that ADCP_Temp returns NAN, the config is re-sent to the ADCP If it happens again, power is temporarily cut to the ADCP and then the configuration sent again after power up Setup involves

Staff can change the settings in the ADCP just by putting a new program in the datalogger. No need for software / cables etc. Can change by sending a program over telemetry Can re-send configuration if something goes wrong Additional benefits of connecting to a datalogger via SDI-12 AND serially

Logger normally; – Measures river height with an Ott CBS – Takes ADCP readings every ten minutes – Takes water quality samples – Pumps water up to a flow cell for sonde readings – Sends data to the web via FTP server Receives an SMS to put it into gauging mode; – Takes ADCP readings every minute – Measures river height with an Ott CBS – Takes water quality samples – Pumps water up to a flow cell for sonde readings – Sends data to the web via FTP server SMS functionality

Space concerns in a datalogger program

Awkward cable juggle when you choose to send configuration to ADCP, can be avoided with SMS Baud rate issues (on reconnecting to logger as well). SDI-12 cable length restrictions Site specific programs Reduced number of bins Requirement to reconnect cable Issues with current system

Sites with highly variable salinity, you could program values from WQ sondes into the instrument in real time Can send individual commands over telemetry Unrealised potential opportunities
