8 Practice: Adverbs and adjectives (Student’s Book – pages 100)
Adjectives describe nouns. Examples: a big car a careful driver a quick meal Adverbs describe verbs. They eat quickly. He drivers carefully. She ran fast. Notice how regular adverbs are formed by adding –ly to the adjective.

(Student’s Book – pages 101) Some adjectives can end in both -ed and -ing. Adjectives with -ed describe people and how they feel. Examples: Nora is bored. I am tired He is worried. Adjectives with -ing ending generally describe things. The book is boring. The job is tiring. The class is interesting.

Does the aunt like the young man’s story? Do the children like the young man’s story? What is the moral of the story of Bertha?

16 Everyday English: catching a train (Student’s Book – pages 105)
Ann is at Oxford Station. She to book the train back from Bristol. Read her conversation with the clerk and answer the questions. A = Ann B = Clerk A: Good morning. Can you tell me the times of trains from Bristol back to Oxford, please? B: Afternoon, evening? When do you want to come back? A: About five o’clock this afternoon. B: About five o’clock. Right. Let’s have a look. There’s a train that leaves at 5:28, then there isn’t another one until 6.50. A: And what time do they get in? B: The 5.28 gets into Oxford at 6.54 and the 6.50 gets in at 8.10. A: Thanks a lot.

Ann is at Oxford Station. She wants to book the train back from Bristol. Read her conversation with the clerk and answer the questions. 1. Where is Ann coming back to? 2. What time do they get in?

24 THE PRESENT PERFECT We use the Present Perfect to talk about experiences in our lives. Have you every been to Paris? We use the Past Simple to say exactly when something happened. When did you go to Paris? I went there (last year, two years ago, in 1998). We make the Present Perfect tense with: have/has + the past participle of the verb. With the Present Perfect, we use: ever in questions: Have you every been to Russia? never in negative sentences: I have never been to Russia. just in positive sentences (a short time before now): He has just arrived. yet in questions and negative sentences: Have you done your homework yet? I haven’t done my homework yet? 24 24
