Information Tool Making Complex Data Useful Ara Design Ltd. Tiit Paabo, e-mail: tiit.paabo@aara.ee 5. April 2016, Opening seminar User-Centered Approach

In this presentation Phases for building Information Tool Navigating through complex data For who you work for – meet your users Important criteria – archivability Bad formats – how flash deceased Don’t try reinvent bicycle – work with prototypes, which are worth of following What information you will produce?

Developing Step by Step 1.Discussion what is essential, what data will be available 2.Brainstorming different solutions, generating ideas 3.Drafting layouts with just pencil and paper 4.Doing simple tests with target groups (early stage testing) 5.Describing essential functions of the tool 6.Analyzing user interface, drafting usability concept 7.Designing more precise layouts by designer 8.Drafting architecture of technical solution 9.Programming and visual design integration 10.Publishing draft version, making it available for test users 11.Testing usability by project participants and testing experts 12.Testing program functions with target groups 13.Analysing test results, making changes when needed 14.Updating database with final data 15.Publishing final version of tool 16.Archiving tool on the end of project for future use 2016 2019 2028

Vision at First, Then Build 2016 2019 2028

Archivability and maintainability ASSESSMENT: However, it is not clear how the produced main output will be maintained and used after project lifetime. CURRENT PLAN: Server and domain villagewaters.eu will be paid for for 12 years to maintain project web identity for longer time after the project duration. All materials will be also mirrored at sykli.fi server and made available with no time limit.

A lot of Data means Databases

Adding, editing and rearranging

Meet the End-User The main target groups of the tool are households and people of scattered dwelling communities [from Project Plan].

Target, medium and mediator

Be Aware of a Browser War Once very famous Flash format.fla, which doesn’t work in iOS and Android

Careful Consideration of Format Universally useful in all modern browsers.... operation systems (Windows, iOS, Android).. and as large span of devices as possible Follows all current Web Standards Anticipates changes in next 10 years (tough!) User friendly (simplicity, familiarity, low entrance barrier, most likely browser-based, usable without installing any additional components)

Working with Prototypes 1.Wizart type solution, for over 358 choices 2.Comparing just two best options 3.TOP 10, notice usage of video 4.Choose what to compare, historical database 5.Product chart, starting with two dimensions 6.Data table only, comparing 2-3 devices 7.Models listed by "Expert rating"

Wizard Type Solution (1/7) Example has 358 choices Asking simple questions, filtering by them

Comparing Two Choices (2/7) Good if there are just few choices More focused on specific features Text and pictures “Journalistic” genre Will most likely survive 10 year lifespan

TOP 10 type list (3/7) Easy to comprehend Uses video next to text Simple review format Pros and cons bullets Clear structure

Choose What to Compare (4/7) 1000’s of models and configurations Goes back about 25 years in history Difficulties in choosing right engine type

Product chart, 2 dimentions (5/7) Vertical axis – screen size Horisontal axis – price All filters stay visible at all time Depends heavily on brauser compatiblity

Comparing data side-by-side (6/7) Notice heavy usage of specific abbreviations Free to select which products to compare Data is grouped in comparison table

Models listed by "Expert rating” (7/7) Comparing $2,400 and $800 is questionable “Expert rating” uses authority, not arguments 4/5 computers in first 5 from one company

Communicating Data Structure (First Structure Draft of Technical Survey) 1.the capacity and the expected purifying efficiency (BOD, P, and N reduction), 2.dimensions and space requirements, 3.supplies, articles and equipment needed for construction and implementation 4.material and energy inputs into the process and their rates, 5.outputs from the process and their rates including removed sludge, 6.technical drawings and specifications, 7.description of the treatment process and 8.user manual. Technical data include also 9.characteristic requirements for the waste water load to be treated, such as total flow, peak flow, duration of flow, temperature range, pH range and impurity concentration ranges, 10.estimates on the probable working life, 11.estimated service needs as materials, spare-parts, and frequency and nature of service calls including sludge removal, as well as 12.estimated dependency of the purification efficiency on the ageing of the system. Process input and output rates are given on yearly basis. Purifying efficiency is given on yearly average, respectively.

In this presentation Information Tool will be built step by step Data will be fitted to relational databases Serve your users – people in scattered dwellings Tool should work 9 years after project ends Robust text and image format will survive longer Follow good examples, learn others’ mistakes Tell me what information you will produce

5-Minute Quiz 124 56 7 3 Column 1Column 2Column 3 Data structure, list of columns:

Your ideas, Your structure 1.Which features are important? 2.What data you will produce during project? 3.What is your data structure (columns)? Thank You! 1.Write your data structure to the Quiz paper 2.Please speak about your ideas during workshop 3.More detailed ideas, mail to tiit.paabo@aara.ee Do:
