2 The 14 th Amendment was passed in 1868 The 15 th Amendment was passed in 1870.

3 ` The 14 th Amendment was ratified on July 9 th, 1868.  It granted citizenship to “all persons born or naturalized in the united States,” which included former slaves, and were recently freed. APUSH | 12.12 Primary Source Document Project Historical Context 14 th Amendment

4 The 15 th Amendment was passed by Congress on February 26 th, 1869.  Ratified on February 3 rd,1870. This Amendment granted African American Men the right to vote. APUSH | 12.12 Primary Source Document Project Historical Context 15 th Amendment

5 The primary audience is all people who are born within the United States or people who are admitted citizenship.  Naturalization. o The process in which a foreign citizen is granted citizenship by completing a set of requirements. 6 The primary audience is citizens of the United States.  This is exclusive to only all white men. The States are also indirectly addressed.  They cannot revoke the right to vote/Suffrage Congress has the power to enforce this. 11 3 clauses: 1.Citizenship Clause- citizenship to those born in U.S.  Directed towards African Americans. 2.Due Process Clause-protects first amendment and prevents it from being revoked without due process. 3.Equal Protection Law- no discrimination by law.  Extended protection to the state governments. 12 Many states were wary of the 15th amendment, mostly because they did not want Chinese and Irish immigrants voting -California and Oregon would not ratify the amendment because they did not want Chinese and Irish immigrants voting. -After the US Army was pulled from the south, white southerners reasserted their power and passed laws that prevented those whose grandfathers weren’t citizens from voting, and even making people pay to vote APUSH | 12.12 Primary Source Document Project Outside Information 15 th Amendment
