2. Tomlinscote School & Sixth Form College IT Device – Information Evening Students have had the benefit of immediate access to IT resources, via their laptops, since they joined the school. The school is absolutely committed to the benefits for learning of easy access to IT resources. The aim of this meeting is to share our plans for continuing this commitment into Years 10 and 11, once the current laptop lease ends.

3. Tomlinscote School & Sixth Form College IT Device – Information Evening We have been researching how IT can have the greatest impact on learning. We have visited many schools and trialled several approaches. We have come to the clear conclusion that software written for Apple products will provide significant value added to the learning of our students. We would like to show you some early examples of this work

The T&L potential of the iPad in the KS4 curriculum Increased use of analytical skills The need to still be able to hand write in the end of KS examinations The increased focus on SPAG- can be aided by a move away from basic tasks performed on other devices Student engagement – self paced learning, increased use of independent learning and personal style

6. The iPad pilot group of staff June 2013 18 staff across all departmental areas- including LS and LRC Trial of apps and the use of the iPad in their own context/subject Taking a lead on staff training

7. The iPad pilot with Year 10 students November 2013 – class set purchased Use of the iPad within the current kS4 curriculum Usage trialled with areas such as revision, exam technique, analysis etc

8. The iPad pilot with Year 9 students January 2014 – new timetable established alongside current Year 10 trial Use of the iPad within the current Year 9 curriculum Usage trialled within all subject areas

Staff evaluation of KS4 curriculum need and device potential January/February 2014 – staff consultation of both laptop and iPad devices in line with SoW Each subject area evaluated their curriculum and how the iPad can be used to enhance their T&L Overwhelmingly in favour of the use of an iPad as the KS4 device In line with changes to KS4 curriculum

Tomlinscote School & Sixth Form College IT Device – Information Evening We have balanced the capabilities, software, weight, cost and ease of use of different machines with the demands of learning in Years 10 and 11 – remember this is in effect only 21 months. We have chosen the iPad Mini – it offers much more than other devices. We will offer a choice to families of ways to provide this extra help to their daughters and sons.

11. Tomlinscote School & Sixth Form College IT Device – Likely Options We receive extra ‘Pupil Premium’ funding for some young people. If your son or daughter is eligible for this, we will use this to pay for the iPad Mini. At the start of the scheme, you can buy through the school. We can purchase the iPad, insurance, case and apps for a similar price as you would pay for the machine alone. We hope to be able to offer you a choice of iPad.

12. Tomlinscote School & Sixth Form College IT Device – Likely Options You can allow your child to bring an iPad you already own, as long as it is not 3 or 4G capable. All insurance risks are your own. You can pay for the iPad by instalments. If you pay the full amount, you will own the device. This is not an ‘equity scheme’. Unlike with the laptops, if you do not join the scheme, or provide an approved iPad, your child will not have access to an iPad in school.

We would appreciate you completing our survey. It can be found on the school website in the ‘quick links’ section and will be live from tonight. We will contact you with further details early in the summer term. At this time, we will need you to make a decision about which option you wish to follow.
