2 Objectives After this training you will be able to: –Identify measures to promote the safety and health of employees to prevent illnesses in the workplace –Utilize tools to assess and avert workplace illnesses –Discuss the importance of educating and training employees on the signs/symptoms of workplace illnesses.

3 Getting Started Develop a plan to suit your individual needs Assign responsibility Conduct a safety and health survey Conduct a workplace assessment Review and compare Ensure safety and health recordkeeping Conduct safety and health training. PLANNING

4 Responsibility Determine who has the responsibility to manage the program Ensure assigned individual: – Has full support of management – Is knowledgeable of hazards – Has necessary support for implementation and control of workplace hazards.

5 Role of the Safety and Health Professional Anticipate possible hazards Recognize the nature of the problem and it’s source Determine the safe level of exposure Evaluate the exposure to determine if there is a hazard Control the situation or eliminate the hazard.

6 Safety and Health Surveys Identify existing or potential safety and health hazards Ensure the safety and health survey includes: –Equipment –Chemicals –Work practices Communicate results.

7 Trend Analysis Recordable Accidents First Aid Cases Inspection Finding Data Close Call/Near Miss Data Employee Hazard Reporting Data Observation Program Cards Records of Training Programs.

8 Job Hazard Analysis Review Review hazard control measures –Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) –Work Practices –Administrative –Engineering Common health hazards –Chemicals –Ergonomics –Fire/Heat –Vibration –Noise.

9 Hazard Communication Intent of standard is for employers and employees to know what hazardous chemicals they are exposed to and what to do in case of accidental exposure or accidents Emergency responders have information on hazardous chemicals they may respond to. 10 Hazard Communication Requirements Hazard communication is accomplished by: – Comprehensive written program – Inventory of chemicals – Container labeling – Material Safety Data Sheets – Employee training.

11 Hazard Communication Training Training –Initially upon employment and when employees responsibilities change Who attends –All employees who are exposed to hazardous substances.

12 Health Hazard Data Routes of entry Health hazards –Acute/Chronic Carcinogenicity Signs and symptoms of exposure Medical conditions that may be aggravated Emergency first aid procedures.

15 Educate Employees on Types of PPE Different types of PPE may include: – Hearing protection – Respiratory protection – Heat-resistant – Chemical-resistant – Abrasion-resistant – Flame-retardant.
