3 MAIN EVENTS OF THE VELVET REVOLUTION 17 November – police supress a peaceful student demonstration in Prague 27 November – a two-hour general strike 10 December – President Gustav Husák appoints a non-communist government (the first one since 1948) and resigns 28 December – Václav Havel is elected as the new president of Czechoslovakia

4  June 1990 – the first democratic elections since 1948 legitimize the new government  31 December 1992 – non- violent dissolution of Czechoslovakia (the so- called Velvet divorce)  1 January 1993 – independent Czech Republic and Slovakia are formed

5  freedom of travel  freedom of speech  freedom of trade  wider variety of products on the market  easier access to some products NEGATIVE RESULTS dissolution of Czechoslovakia increased national debt much fewer social guarantees unemployment increased price of some products
