Welcome to 4 th Grade Step Up Night!

North Carolina Objectives North Carolina has adopted Common Core objectives for mathematics. Onslow County has created Standard Division Documents for the order in which grade level teachers deliver instruction of the Common Core objectives. These documents are being updated and will be displayed on the Onslow County Schools websites soon.

End of Grade Testing North Carolina requires that all students enrolled in public schools take a year end assessment in mathematics. This test is known as EOG Ready Mathematics. The EOG Ready Mathematics is administered in 1 setting with a calculator inactive and a calculator active section. A student can receive a score of 1- 5. A score of 1 or 2 is not considered passing. The EOG Ready test must be administered in the last 10 days of school. 4 th graders who do not pass, do not have the opportunity to retest.

Grading and Homework Expectations for Mathematics Report Card and Progress Report Averages: – 10 point scale 90-100 A 80-90 B 70-80 C 60-70 D 60 and below F Math Homework can include workbook page(s), writing multiplication facts, computer based projects or internet assignments for those with internet access, or a math worksheet(s). All 4 th grade teachers post homework on the CFIES website, and students are required to write it in the planner. Go Math- This is our current math curriculum. It comes with 2 consumable workbooks for each student and an assigned computer based math trainer for each student.

4 th Grade Homework Expectations Purpose: to practice concepts and skills learned during class each day Approximately 60-90 minutes nightly Each teacher posts homework on his/her website Examples of assignments in each subject area: – Reading: Reading logs, summaries, comprehension practice passages – Math: Practice pages, test review – Word Study: Spelling practice, vocabulary development – Science/Social Studies: Current events, test review

Websites that students were able to utilize this year included: Think Central.com – Students receive personalized math practice from Go Math. The teacher will provide the student with a user name and password. StudyIsland.com- Students are able to access at home or school; provides interactive lessons and test practice questions for all areas of the mathematics curriculum. Usernames and passwords are provided by the teacher. USA TestPrep- This is the current Onslow County purchased website to prepare students for the EOGs. Moby Max- This is a new website that we have not had before that is being purchased for our school by the current administration.

Carolina Forest International Elementary School Standards Overview 2014-2015 Onslow County Schools System NC Essential Standards: Science Curriculum for 4 th Grade

Life Science Ecosystems 4.L.1  Understanding the effects of environmental changes, adaptations and behaviors that enable animals (including humans) to survive in changing habitats. 4.L.1.1  Give examples of changes in an organism’s environment that are beneficial to it and some that are harmful. 4.L.1.2  Explain how animals meet their needs by using behaviors in response to information received from the environment. 4.L.1.3  Explain how humans can adapt their behavior to live in changing habitats (e.g., recycling wastes, establishing rain gardens, planting trees and shrubs to prevent flooding and erosion). 4.L.1.4  Explain how differences among animals of the same population sometimes give individuals and advantage in surviving and reproducing in changing habitats.

Earth Science Earth in the Universe 4.E.1  Explain the causes of day and night and phases of the moon. 4.E.1.1  Explain the cause of day and night on the rotation of Earth on its axis. 4.E.1.2  Explain the monthly changes in the appearance of the moon, based on the moon’s orbit around the Earth.

Physical Science Forces and Motion 4.P.1  Explain how various forces affect the motion of an object. 4.P.1.1 Explain how magnets interact with all things made of iron and with other magnets to produce motion without touching them. 4.P.1.2 Explain how electrically charged objects push or pull on other electrically charged objects and produce motion.

Matter, Properties and Change 4.P.2  Understanding the composition and properties of matter before and after they undergo a change or interaction. 4.P.2.1 o Compare the physical properties of samples of matter: (strength, hardness, flexibility, ability to conduct heat, ability to conduct electricity, ability to be attracted by magnets, reactions to water and fire). 4.P.2.2 o Explain how minerals are identified using tests for the physical properties of hardness, color, luster, cleavage and streak. 4.P.2.3 o Classify rocks as metamorphic, sedimentary or igneous based on their composition, how they are formed and the process that create them.

Energy: Conservation and Transfer Energy: Conservation and Transfer 4.P.3  Recognize that energy takes various forms that may be grouped based on their interaction with matter. 4.P.3.1  Recognize that the basic forms of energy (light, sound, heat, electrical, and magnetic) as the ability to cause motion or create change. 4.P.3.2  Recognize that light travels in a straight line until it strikes an object or travel from one medium to another, and that light can be reflected, refracted, or absorbed.

Earth History  Understand the use of fossils and changes in the surface of the earth as evidence of the history of Earth and its changing life forms. 4.E.2 4.E.2.1  Compare fossils (including molds, casts, and preserved parts of plants and animals) to one another and to living organisms. 4.E.2.2  Infer ideas about Earth’s early environments from fossils of plants and animals that lived long ago. 4.E.2.3  Give examples of how the surface of the earth changes due to slow process such as erosion and weathering, and rapid processes such as landslides, volcanic eruptions, and earthquakes.

Molecular Biology Molecular Biology 4.L.2  Understand food and the benefits of vitamins, minerals and exercise. 4.L.2.1 Classify substances as food or non-food items based on their ability to provide energy and materials for survival, growth and repair of the body. 4.L.2.2 Explain the role of vitamins, minerals and exercise in maintaining a healthy body.

In 4 th grade, students are introduced to North Carolina, its ethnic diversity, culture, people, and geographic regions. Social Studies “North Carolina Essential Standards Fourth Grade Social Studies.” NC Public Schools. n.p. 2 Dec. 2010. 1 1

4 th Grade Social Studies As North Carolina is explored from the first inhabitants through present day, students will focus on the social disciplines of:

Resources Fourth Grade students will utilize the following resources throughout the year: SS Textbook: Harcourt Horizons North Carolina text North Carolina Social Studies Weekly Grades Throughout the year students’ grades will be based on classwork assignments, tests, and projects

Field Trips Field trips this year have included visits to the Coastal Carolina Community College, the Onslow County Museum, and Beaufort Historic Site If you would like to be a chaperone on a field trip next year, you need to be fingerprinted through the county office. Forms are in the school’s office.
