2 Abolitionist: A person who strongly favors with doing away slavery. Apprentice: Assistant who is assigned to learn the trade of a skilled craftsman. American system: Policies devised by Henry Clay to stimulate the growth of industry.

3 Blockade Runner : Ship that sails into & out of a blockaded area. Bounty: Money given as a reward, such as to encourage enlistment in the army. Bond: A note issued by the government, which promises to pay off a loan with interest.

4 Capitalism: An economic system based on private property & free enterprise. Cash crop: Farm crop raised to be sold for money. Civil War: Conflict between opposing groups of citizens of the same war.

5 Debtor: Person or country that owes money. Dictator: A leader who rules with total authority, often in a cruel or brutal manner. Depreciate: To decrease in value.

6 Embargo: An order prohibiting trading with another country. Emancipate: To free from slavery. Emigrant: A person who leaves a country or region to live elsewhere.

7 Federalists: Supporters of the constitution. Fugitive: Run away or trying to run away. Frigate: Warship

8 Genocide: The deliberate destruction of a racial, political, or cultural group. Global Warming: A steady increase in average world temperatures. Greenback: A piece of U.S. paper money first issued by the north during the Civil War

9 Holocaust: The name given to a mass slaughter of Jews & other groups by the Nazi’s during World War II. Horizontal Interrogation: The combining of competing firms into one corporation. Harriet Tubman: A woman who escaped slavery, then went and help other slaves escape as well.

10 Impeach: To formally charge a public official with mis-conduct in office Impressment: Forcing people into service as in the Navy. Import: To buy goods from foreign markets

11 Judicial Review: The right of the supreme court to determine if a law violates the constitution. Joint occupation: The possession & setting of an area shared by 2 or more countries. Andrew Jackson: 4 th president of the United States.

12 Helen Keller: Overcame her illness of being deaf, blind and mute to help others with the same sicknesses. Bleeding Kansas: It was a rival between two sides of Kansas, one for and one against slavery. John F. Kennedy: 35 th president of the united states.

13 Landslide: An overwhelming victory. Lynching: Putting to death, a person by the illegal action of a mob. Literacy: The ability to read and write.

14 Manifest Destiny: The idea popular in the U.S. during the 1800’s, that the country must expand it’s boundaries to the Pacific. Mission: Religious settlement. Martyr: A person who sacrifices his or her life for a principal or cause.

15 Neutrality: Taking no side in a conflict. Nullify: To cancel or make ineffective. Naturalization: To grant full citizenship to a foreigner.

16 Offensive: Position of attacking or the attack itself. Ordinance: A law or regulation. Override: To overturn or defeat, as a bill proposed in congress.

17 Partisan: Favoring one side of an issue. Pilgrimage: Journey to a holy place. Prejudice: An unfair opinion not based on facts.

18 Quaker: Believed that every individual had an “inner light” that could lead them to salvation.

19 Ratify: To give official approval.
