Shengchi Eddie Hsu
24
Learning Resource Centres Library Induction will take place during the first Core/ Tutorial sessions Activate your account and change your default password on any college student computer Harvard Referencing guide. (Available at the Woodbury LRC) Woodbury and Millennium LRCs – useful resources Printed materials (books and periodicals), E-books, electronic journals, LRC catalogues. Computer facilities Shengchi Eddie Hsu
25
Canvas & Storing Your Assignments Teaching and Learning resources are made available on respective module Moodle pages. This is NOT a distance learning programme, you cannot always catch up with the materials on Moodle. Attending lessons will ensure that you have the most accurate input to assist you with your assignments. Canvas and the materials there are used to stretch, expand and broaden your knowledge and learning experience. You may be asked to contribute to online forum discussions where applicable. We recommend you subscribe to free Cloud services such as Dropbox or Google Drive. Shengchi Eddie Hsu
26
Assessment of Coursework Mainly assignment-based assessments At least one test in each module Your assignment must satisfy the assessment criteria before grades can be awarded (i.e. You must complete all the tasks satisfactorily) Assignments are NOT necessarily given to you at the start of the unit. However, you will be informed of the unit contents and learning outcomes stipulated by Open Awards. Mindset: Learning is the key; assignments and tests are to assess your learning. Shengchi Eddie Hsu
27
Submission and Resubmission All assignments must be submitted before the deadline (Time: 5pm) Late submission will result in the assignment grade being capped at Pass Late submission will not be allowed for resubmission (i.e. if you fail to complete and achieve all tasks, you will have to go through the referral procedures). In all cases, assignments to be signed in and submitted at the Woodbury Reception (unless otherwise stated). Your assignments should be marked and returned no longer than 4 weeks from the submission date. All resubmissions are to be completed and resubmitted within 7 calendar days from the date of return. Shengchi Eddie Hsu
28
Resubmissions LATE resubmissions will be capped at PASS. Use the feedback from tutors effectively to ensure that you meet the criterion (criteria) in your resubmission No grade polishing: that is to say you can only “redo or add to” the section(s) which does/ do not satisfy the criterion (criteria); sections that have achieved cannot be changed, amended, or bettered in any way. Resubmissions to be completed as a separate document and attached to the first submission. Final Unit grade will be reached with the collective evidence of your first submission and the resubmitted section(s). Shengchi Eddie Hsu
29
What is “Referral”? It means that you have failed your attempts of assignment submission either (A) Because your late submission does not satisfy all the assessment criteria Or (B) Because your resubmission does not satisfy all the assessment criteria In this case, your work will be “referred” to the Exam Board for consideration. This can be a very time-consuming process and can delay your progress on the programme. We highly recommend that you meet the deadline and effectively use the feedback. Shengchi Eddie Hsu
30
Assignment Presentation Word-processed, font Arial, size 12 and double-spaced (unless otherwise stated). Page number should be clearly marked with surname (e.g. Jackson 1) and aligned to the right in the Heading. Make sure all pages are submitted. In the Assignment Brief (TA2), all boxes, including submission date, signatures etc, must be completed before submission. Learner comment to be completed after assessment is complete. Tutors may require you to present your assignments differently; please consult your module tutor or respective assignment brief for details. Shengchi Eddie Hsu
31
Extensions and Mitigating Circumstances EExtensions and Mitigating Circumstances Form available in your Access to HE Student handbook. (Editable version downloadable on Moodle) AA maximum of 5 working days can be granted AAll records of extension applications will be recorded on Pro-monitor and Mandatory documentations Shengchi Eddie Hsu

Grading There are 7 Grading Descriptors pre-determined by the QAA. Open Awards stipulate select GDs against each unit, dependent on the nature of the unit and the assessment criteria. Tutors select the grading components to best and most fairly grade each and every assignment. To be eligible for grading, you must comply with the submission rules. Shengchi Eddie Hsu
35
An example of a GD Source: QAA Grading Handbook (2014) Shengchi Eddie Hsu
36
Working out your final unit grade Fi FIGURE 1 Shengchi Eddie Hsu

If still dissatisfied, complete an Appeals Form (Avaialble on Canvas). Deliver your assignment and the completed form to the Curriculum Manager, Lisa Matthews. You will then be contacted for an interview Remarking can be assigned, but grades may move up or down. Shengchi Eddie Hsu
39
Internal and External Moderations Internal Moderation will be completed before the assignments are returned to you. External moderations take place a few times in a year, students (a) may be required to attend an interview with the external moderator; (b) are responsible to collating, keeping and presenting their marked assignments to the external moderator when required; (c) All grades awarded through marking and IV are not formalised until after the EV visits. Shengchi Eddie Hsu
