Greenliving in Norway 12 tonnes CO2/person I Norway (lavutslippsutvalget) Sustainable level is 1,1 tonnes/person. 20% of greenhouse gases come from households. A typical British family of four emits 4.2 tonnes CO2 from their house each year. 4.4 tonnes from their car. 8 tonnes from the production, packaging and distribution of the food they eat!

Greenliving A green consumer network 15 major membership- based NGOs (8,4 mill. members) About 50 000 participating households 1/3 of budget from Ministry of Environment (2007=17 mill. NOK) 4 regions,10 offices, HQ in Oslo, 35 employees www.agenda21stavanger.no www.gronnhverdag.no www.klimaklubben.no Greenliving network

Mission: ”Make it easier for consumers to make sustainable choices in their daily life!” Object: Change of action, rather than attitude living life Greener

The Green Pledge: STEP BY STEP

How green is your energy? There are many good reasons to reduce your energy consumption: We pollute less; We don’t have to build many new power plants; We can save money; We emit less CO2;

How green is your energy? This is how the average household energy is divided between appliances: Ca. 31 percent heating Ca. 11 percent lighting Ca. 11 percent washing machine Ca. 10 percent hot water Ca. 4 percent refridgerator Ca. 3 percent dishwasher Ca. 2 percent dryer

How green is your energy? Did you know … … if everyone in Sibiu unplugged their standby energy appliances, the whole of Saliste could be supplied with free electricity for 1 year? …Or if everyone in Transilvania reduced their electric heating with 1 degree we could save over 100.000 T CO2?

How green is your food? Importing one kilogram of fresh spinach from California to the UK uses energy equivalent to burning a 100 watt light bulb nonstop for a month. It takes 3.5 times as much energy to produce a litre of non-organic milk in comparison to a litre of organic milk due to the energy used to produce synthetic fertilisers.

How green is your food cont. 1 kg meat (beef) contributes to 22, 3 kg CO2 emission. 1 kg potato contributes to 189 gram CO2 emission

How Green can you travel? How far can you travel on 10 kg/co2 Train: 625 km Tube: 476 km Bus: 83,4 km Carferry: 83,4 km Car: 54,5 km Propellerplane(Widerøe): 43,5 km Charterflight: 33,7 km International flight: 21 km Domestic flight: 17,3 km Speedferry: 12,5 km

How Green is your waste?

Recycling waste in Stavanger Paper and cardboard: Green Bin: Newspapers, magasines, milk cartons are rinsed, folded and packed in a plastic bag. Dangerous waste: Red container. Paint, solvants, medicines, glue, oilfilters, pesticides, longlife lightbulbs, batteries Organic waste: Brown bins. Kitchen waste and garden waste. Home composting is a Greener option and gives you reduced renovation fees and a nutritional fertilizer to improve your garden soil. EE- waste: Free to deliver at electric suppliers, at Forus miljøstasjon and can also be collected by Renovasjonen. Packaging waste: Glass, metal and plastic packaging is rinsed before taken to the enviro-points. Cans and bottles are returned to shops. Textiles: Delivered to Fretex enviro-points or directly to the Fretex shops. Recyclable waste: To be delivered at serviced enviro-point in Forus or Sele. Rest: Black bin. Whatever is left after recyclables have been sorted out. This is treated at the energyrecycling plant at Forus.

The green consumer Chose organic or locally produced when available Chose fairtrade products if available Avoid pre-fabricated and ready-to-eat food Chose vegetarian, fish and less meat every week

UNICEF REPORT Compares childrens situation in OECD countries and 8 other european countries. Norway: –2. place on material values. –19. place on life satisfaction scale In the past, people never had leisure time but they always had time…today we have a lot of leisure time, but we never have time….

What can I do at home? Reduce Re-use Repair and Recycle Compost your biodegradeable waste at home Avoid plastic wrappers and excessive packaging Turn off stand-by switch and unplug electrical appliances Travel by public transportation when available

What can I do at home? Chose to share time with friends and family over buying new things and splashing out on expensive hobbies. Give a precious christmas gift to your family and friends this year – give time…time to play a game, to read a story, to go fishing, to babysit…
