1 Broward Community College Distance Learning Physical Therapist Assistant Program Offered at Edison College, Lee Campus

2 Overview of the Profession PTA’s work with patients disabled by disease, injury or accident to improve function and restore quality of life.

3 Work Environments PTA’s are employed in a variety of settings including –Hospitals –Private Outpatient Clinics –Rehabilitation Centers –Wellness Centers –Nursing Homes –School Systems –Home Health Agencies

4 Hospitals Individuals with joint replacements, post operative patients, those in the intensive care unit. Assist them to improve their mobility to return home.

5 Individuals with shoulder, back, knee, and other orthopedic injuries. Apply modalities, develop exercise programs and educate the patient to promote return to work and leisure activities. Outpatient Clinics

6 Wellness Centers Create and implement exercise conditioning programs, monitor progress, and educate patients on injury prevention.

7 Rehabilitation Centers Improve the ability to walk and perform daily activities of patients with: Spinal Cord Injury Head Injury Stroke Amputation Multiple Sclerosis

8 Accomplish all this through your knowledge of Anatomy & Physiology Disease Processes Medications Specialized Therapeutic Techniques Electrical and Thermal Modalities Massage

9 Curriculum Delivery Combined Distance Learning and Face-to-Face Edison Lee Campus Live Two-Way Interactive Video Online Courses Face to Face Labs Three Clinical Rotations

10 Educational Plan – Admissions Criteria Minimum 2.5 grade point average C or higher in degree required courses Applicants ranked by number of general education courses completed and GPA Top 16 students accepted

11 Degree Requirements – General Education Courses Prior to application, students encouraged to complete A & P 1 A & P 2 HSC1531 Medical Terminology Additional suggested pre-requisites to improve standing for acceptance ENC1101 PSY2012 MAT9012/9020 Sequence Humanities Elective

12 Curriculum Sequence – 2 year AS Degree Application Deadline Early Spring Program Begins Summer A term with remaining general education courses Core PTA courses begin in Fall Term Licensure Examination required upon graduation to practice.

13 Core Course Sequence First Year Fall –On campus classes 3 days per week First Year Spring –Concurrent on campus classes and off campus clinical 5 days per week NO Summer Session for Core Classes

14 Core Course Sequence Second Year Fall –Concurrent on campus classes and off campus clinical 5 days per week Second Year Spring A –On campus classes 2 days per week Second Year Spring B –Off campus clinical 5 days per week
