Friday May 11, 2012 Objective: You will know that the male reproductive system creates, stores, and delivers sperm.

Let’s Review Health 1. Physical Health 2. Mental Health- includes self-esteem 3. Social Health

Endocrine System Purpose- The purpose of the endocrine system is to control many of your body’s daily activities and to control overall development Parts- endocrine glands, hormones (12 Down), and the hypothalamus (8 Across) Example- Adrenal gland produces adrenaline, pituitary gland (13 Across) produces HGH and FSH

Sex Glands Testes (males)- Produce testosterone which regulates the development of sex organs and secondary sexual characteristics during puberty Ovaries (female)- Produce estrogen and progesterone which do similar things in the female body and aid in pregnancy and birth (9 Down)

Male Reproductive System The male reproductive system is made up of both internal and external parts. Its purpose is to create, store, and deliver sperm.

The Parts Testes (4 Across)- produce testosterone and sperm Scrotum (5 Down)- the sac of skin that contains the testes Epididymis (15 Across)- a J-shaped tube located at the back of each testis, while in the epididymis, sperm mature and gain the ability to move

More Parts Penis (10 Across)- external (outside) sexual organ through which sperm leave the body Glans- the head of the penis, often covered in foreskin unless a circumcision has been performed Urethra (7 Across)- tube that passes through the penis and out of the body, carries urine from the bladder and sperm from the vas deferens (tubes that carry sperm from the epididymis)

Yes, More Parts! Prostrate- a gland found near the bladder that produces 35% of the fluid found in semen Sperm (3 Down)- the male sex cells Semen (2 down)- a mixture of sperm and fluids (the fluids help nourish the sperm and lubricate the passageways that the sperm will travel in)

Disorders of the Male Reproductive System O Sterility- unable to reproduce, caused by exposure to certain chemicals, unable to create healthy sperm, impact to the genital region O Undescended Testes- when a testicle does not drop down into the scrotum at birth O Inguinal Hernia- when part of the intestine pushes through a weak spot in the scrotum O Cancer- Prostate (older men) and testicular (men 15-34)

Female Reproductive System O Ovaries (9 Down)- where egg cells are stored and where female sex hormones are created O Fallopian Tubes (6 Down)- small tubes that carry unfertilized eggs to the uterus O Uterus (1 Down)- where a fertilized egg will grow and develop O Cervix (17 Across)- the narrow base of the uterus O Vagina (11 Down)- passage leading from the uterus to the outside of the female body

Puberty Puberty (14 Across)- the period of sexual development during which males and females become sexually mature www.discoveryeducation.com

Well, Now What? Once the male body has reached puberty, he can get a female pregnant, assuming she has also reached puberty. After puberty, the male body is producing sperm, the male sex cell. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kGN2dcj NUY&feature=related

The Rest of the Story… After intercourse, the sperm begin their journey towards the female’s egg cell. In order for pregnancy to occur, one sperm cell must find the egg and penetrate its outer covering. Once that happens, no other sperm will be allowed to enter the egg. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkjzMyesI Pg&list=HL1336745033&feature=mh_lolz

Multiple Births Identical Twins- develop from the same fertilized egg, occasionally, the fertilized egg (zygote) splits into 2 identical zygotes Fraternal Twins- develop when two eggs are released from the ovary and both eggs are fertilized by two sperm http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkKWApOA G2g
