3 Transatlantic Slave Trade  Started with the Spanish  Continued with each additional nation  Over 10 million African slaves were brought across the Atlantic from 1518 to 1800 while only 2 to 2.5 million Europeans migrated to the New World during this period

4 The Columbian Exchange (Grand Exchange)  Following years of separation the Old and New World became intertwined once again  Occurred after Columbus’ arrival in the New World  Cultural and biological exchange of ideas & goods  Animal, plant and bacterial life of two world collided  Had lasting effects on the world  Some question if it was an unequal trade  Why?

5  New World Was Introduced To:  New diseases  no prior experience/immunity  devastating effects on populations  New weeds and pests  New Livestock and Pests  New Food and Fiber Crops  Old World Was Introduced To:  New Food and Fiber Crops  improved diets & fomented trade  Expanded the scope of production of popular drugs between two worlds  Brought pleasure and consequences  Coffee, sugar and tobacco
