Sachse FFA 2015-2016 Chapter Overview

Welcome ! The Sachse FFA chapter is a student led organization for all students enrolled in agricultural science courses at Sachse High School! We are able to participate in a variety of activities such as LDEs, CDEs, show animal projects, Relay for Life and various other community activities. Having a background or any previous knowledge of agriculture is not required! Through involvement in the FFA students gain skills and friendships that will last a lifetime.

2015-2016 Sachse FFA

SHS FFA 2015-2016 Goals This year, the Sachse FFA Chapter had a few goals we wanted to accomplish: We wanted to complete a working draft of our Program of Activities that includes activities we did this year and ideas for future years. We pursued student, administration and community support. We strived to create meaningful connections in the community and district.

Membership

Membership for 2015-2016 25 out of 208 students in agricultural classes or 12% are active dues paying members of SHS FFA. 5 of the 40 AFNR students or 12.5% are members. There were many other students who were interested in joining but either were not in an agriculture class this year or decided to wait for next year so they would have the whole year to be a member and would not already be involved in other things. (These numbers do not include 4 Fall semester Small Animal Mgmt. classes as they were not able to be set up in AET. These numbers would be many repeated students that we have in the other courses.)

Chapter Demographics SHS FFA Program: 88 % White/Caucasian 8 % Hispanic 0 % African-American 4 % Asian 0 % Other.04 % Special Education Campus: 36.3 % White/Caucasian 35.9 % Hispanic 15.7 % African-American 9.5 % Asian 2.5 % Other 7.7 % Special Education

Strategy for 100% With only 12% participation in our first year, Sachse FFA is looking to improve that percentage by: reaching out earlier in the year before students get involved in other organizations recruiting at the middle school level promoting all the great things we do and keeping recruitment a priority all thru the year. We are also looking at ways to get the students in the Small Animal Mgmt. classes to join by showing them that FFA has things to offer them even if they are not in another agriculture class or interested in large animals, speaking contests or showing.

Supervised Agricultural Experience

While not all students in agricultural classes are required to join FFA, they have been asked to participate in an SAE. SAE’s are very important to the success of our organization so SHS FFA looks to continue supporting all agriculture students to explore different fields and learn more about agriculture, agribusiness, and animal sciences.

Supervised Agricultural Experience All students have been introduced to the concept of SAE. Our SAEs include chicken projects, exploring agriculture related topics, growing plants, caring for pets and working in and out of the agriculture industry.

SAEs We are learning the key benefits of record keeping through theAET.com Active Students: 136 - 67% SAEs: 140 Jrn Entries: 2,364 Jrn Hours: 5,510 Fin Entries: 53 We plan on working from the start of the school year next year to ensure more students consider their record book a vital part of their agriculture education.

SAE Strategies The goal is to have 100% of students complete and work on an SAE from the beginning through the end of the school year. SHS plans on offering more Principles of AFNR classes to help introduce students to the ideas of SAE, agriculture, and FFA in the coming years. We also plan to continue to include this information in other agriculture classes until a majority of students in the program have had time to get the information.
