The Civil Rights Movement was a worldwide political movement for equality between blacks and whites. It occurred between 1950- 1968. It outlawed racial discrimination against African Americans and regain full citizenship. The movement consisted of protest marches, boycotts, and refusal to abide by segregation laws. CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT

Martin Luther King, Jr. was a Civil Rights leader born in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1929. He dedicated his life to achieving equality and justice for all Americans of all colors. He is well known for his “I have a Dream” speech. He was arrested many times in his life for standing up for he believed in. King was assassinated by James Earl Ray on April 4, 1968 on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel. MARTIN LUTHER KING

Rosa Parks was an African-American civil rights activist. On December 1, 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama, Parks refused to obey the bus driver’s order to give her seat up to make room for a white passenger. ROSA PARKS

Harriet Tubman was a runaway slave from Maryland who became known as the "Moses of her people." Over the course of 10 years, made 19 trips into the South and escorted over 300 slaves to freedom along the Underground Railroad, a secret network of safe houses where runaway slaves could stay on their journey to freedom. The first African-American child to attend an all white elementary school in the South. She attended William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1960. As soon as Bridges got into the school, white parents went in and brought their own children out; all teachers refused to teach while a black child was enrolled. There is now a Ruby Bridges Foundation, which was formed in 1999 to promote "the values of tolerance, respect, and appreciation of all differences". RUBY BRIDGES

The election of the anti-slavery Abraham Lincoln as president in 1860 caused seven southern states to secede from the Union to form the Confederate States of America. The conflicts went on for four years. The Civil War pitted neighbor against neighbor. The Civil War proved to be the coldest war ever fought on American soil. THE CIVIL WAR

The March on Washington was held on August 28, 1963 in Washington D.C. A quarter of a million people came to protest against segregation. John Lewis and Martin Luther King, Jr. both gave speeches. King gave his infamous “I Have a Dream” speech there. MARCH ON WASHINGTON

Jackie Robinson was the first African American baseball player to be selected to play on a Major League Baseball team. He was chosen to play for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. His enormous talent helped lead the Brooklyn Dodgers to six pennants and one World Series Championship FIRST BLACK BASEBALL PLAYER

The Underground Railroad was a group of people who helped fugitive slaves escape to the North and to Canada. Runaway slaves would travel from house to house trying to free themselves. Most of the people that hid the slaves in their houses were white and they would light a candle in their window to let the slaves know that it was a safe house. UNDERGROUND RAILROAD
